The closer she gets to the center of town, the more serious she realizes the earthquake was. She passes the school where, just a few minutes earlier, a lively soccer game was being played. A series of massive cracks have opened up in the middle of the field, exposing dark layers of earth.

Dayana creeps up to one and stares into the depths. A stab of anxiety makes her bones tremble. A rough shiver travels up from the base of her spine. She quickly steps back. The school itself looks as though it could collapse at any minute. One of the walls has completely buckled, leaving the other three walls crooked and bent. A wave of nausea hits Dayana’s stomach.

Dayana wonders if her own school is okay. People are rushing in and out to rescue anyone trapped inside. Those who have already been rescued sit outside, numb with shock. Dayana searches the faces, looking for anyone familiar. It is hard to tell. Everyone is covered in gray stone dust. Would she recognize Mami or Papi if she saw them? The thought of her parents pushes her to hurry. They must be okay, she tells herself. But the faster they are reunited, the better. Dayana reaches the town center and is stunned to see that it is in an even more disastrous condition.

Brick buildings look like they are seconds from falling, the bumpy mortar flaking off and exposing the brick underneath. Piles of rubble that were once walls are scattered violently across the ground. Support beams are fully exposed. Some supports stand alone as the walls around them are destroyed completely. The less sturdy buildings made of weaker materials like wood have suffered much more damage.

Most have fully collapsed. Roofs have fallen in. Adobe homes, made from mudbrick, have completely crumbled into dust. In some places, the only clue a home once stood there is a front door lying in a pile of wreckage. Someone is crying, but Dayana doesn’t know where they are. A child, probably five or six years old, steps into Dayana’s path. His face is coated in thick, grayish-orange dust. His cheeks are streaked with tears. Dayana hesitates. She wants to find her family.

But she can’t ignore a terrified child.

Text alignment: Auto-justification [OFF] (if the eBook reader has this feature) Auto-hyphenation: [OFF] (if the eBook reader has this feature) Font style: Publisher default setting [ON] (if the eBook reader has this feature) In Settings, change the font size to a size you are most comfortable with.
