The adjutant will be issuing orders as to where we are to line up, but each man is to be in good order, shaved and to wear a shirt and find some headgear from somewhere. You\u2019ve still got your helmets, wear those. Also, we want to show the little yellow bastards that we are not downhearted.<\/p>\n

The Colonel says for every man to remember that we are Australian.\u2019 This order was of some significance. Already the men were going around unshaven and in shorts and boots only. Discipline was slipping a little, and that had to improve. Captain Mann continued. \u2018When the line of Japanese cars approaches you are to stand to attention. An officer will give the first salute, when he does so, other ranks will salute.<\/p>\n

I expect there will be some Jap soldiers around so if anyone thinks of giving rude signs, don\u2019t. They will probably beat you up, if not bayonet you. Any questions? That man \u2026\u2019 \u2018Do we take water and rations sir?\u2019 \u2018Good question, yes, you\u2019d better have them but put them out of sight when the Japs are coming.\u2019 \u2018This isn\u2019t some ruse to get us all together and then shoot the lot of us is it sir?\u2019<\/p>\n
