No longer field upon field of golden wheat, and the rainbow colours of fruits and vegetables, cattle grazing in paddocks, and droids working the land. Now there is nothing but blackened fields of ash as far as the eye can see, only the skeletons of leafless trees remaining.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened here?\u201d Emma asks in horror. We skim low over a field of ash and see a crowd of droids attempting to plough through the dust. \u201cI do not know,\u201d I say. \u201cIt was not always like this.\u201d \u201cWhat used to be here?\u201d \u201cFarms,\u201d I say, swallowing. \u201cAgricultural land.\u201d \u201cIt looks like a war zone,\u201d Emma says. \u201cAre we close to where the fighting was?\u201d \u201cNo. Something else has happened here.\u201d I peer out at the wasteland, certain that the Grytons here must be starving.<\/p>\n

Our shuttle hovers over more scorched earth and then comes to rest beside my cousin\u2019s dwelling. He was a wealthy Alpha with plenty of land and the size of his glittering mansion reflects this, although I note the metal is tarnished and the great gates that surround the dwelling broken and left unrepaired. As the doors of our shuttle open, air from these lands comes whistling inside and it is thick with dust and ash.<\/p>\n

Emma shields her face with her arm and coughs. Perhaps it was not wise to stop here but what is done is done. I climb out of my seat and out into the fading light. My cousin hovers by the door and greets me. I remember him as a great jovial Alpha with the countenance of a bear and I have to stifle a gasp at his radically altered appearance. He stands crooked, leaning on a stick, and his frame is withered, his face thin. He has the eyes of someone fading away.<\/p>\n

I wonder if he is ill. Yet despite this, he greets me with a cheeriness I remember. \u201cAhhh young Tor. You are most welcome indeed. You and your guests,\u201d he adds as my friends, my Omega and her pet emerge from our shuttle and a hint of curiosity sparks in his eyes. \u201cPlease follow me.\u201d<\/p>\n

We walk with him through the broken gates and step inside the mansion. \u201cThe clan has just finished eating I\u2019m afraid,\u201d he tells me, and I wonder if he is telling me the truth or whether there is not enough food to spare for so many guests. The northern Alphas live in clans and work their farms together. In my cousin\u2019s clan there will be his Omega and their children, if they have any, but many Beta families too.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s okay,\u201d I tell him, \u201cwe have brought our own.\u201d<\/p>\n
