He needs a weak draft.\u201d \u201cNot just vomiting,\u201d the wife interrupted timidly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s been running from the other end since last night.\u201d Daniel\u2019s grip loosened slightly. \u201cDiarrhea?\u201d Healey flailed. \u201cDon\u2019t let him move,\u201d Harry snapped. The wife nodded. \u201cI can\u2019t keep him clean, but he\u2019s passing\u2026well, it\u2019s scarcely more than water now.\u201d Daniel traded glances with Harry, but Harry spoke first. \u201cHis color. Look.\u201d There was no window, and the paltry lamplight made it difficult to distinguish colors, but Harry was right. Sam\u2019s skin bore a strange gray tint. \u201cWhen\u2019s the last time he ate or drank?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel asked. \u201cI gave him stew an hour ago, but it all came up and out again.\u201d As she spoke, the struggling man whimpered and went limp at last. Harry released him, smoothing down his crumpled jacket. \u201cKeep still, now. We don\u2019t want any trouble.\u201d Though his voice was calm, Daniel recognized fear in the man\u2019s eyes as he bent close, searching inside his open bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink it\u2019s a double diagnosis?\u201d Harry whispered. Delirium tremens and cholera at the same time? Daniel exhaled in a sharp burst, desperate to believe this was all caused by hunger and a lack of alcohol. But he couldn\u2019t tell, and they needed to know for certain. \u201cShow me his chamber pot.\u201d As Harry made to move toward the wife, Sam Healey turned his head, face twisting into submission in a grotesque smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you taking bets? Half a crown on Voltaire.\u201d He reached up and pushed the wooden spoon against Harry\u2019s coat. \u201cDear Lord, he\u2019s at the races now,\u201d Mrs. Healey moaned. \u201cHe\u2019s not usually like this,\u201d she promised. \u201cHe drinks away his wages, but he\u2019s never deranged.\u201d Daniel studied the man, imagining his face calm instead of wearing this mask of mania. \u201cWe can\u2019t allow him to get agitated again,\u201d Harry muttered. \u201cAfter two nights of no sleep, his heart might give out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he won\u2019t sleep on his own, we\u2019ll have to make him.\u201d Daniel looked at Harry\u2019s bag. \u201cYou carry chloroform, don\u2019t you?\u201d Harry nodded. \u201cJust a bottle.
