She lifted her head, messy waves covering half of her sleepy face. Waking after a whole night in economy sitting shouldn\u2019t have made someone look this attractive. Her cheeks were even rosier than before, like- ly from rubbing her face on his shoulder. Elliot smiled at the thought. \u201cCheers to your first meal in Ireland.\u201d He raised his plastic coffee cup to Lu. \u201cI promise it gets much, much better.\u201d Lu raised her cup as well, her easy laugh filling him with relief that his joke had landed. \u201cAre you saying this isn\u2019t the traditional Irish breakfast?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNah.\u201d He looked down at their sorry trays. \u201cThat\u2019s just hard, tasteless bread.\u201d \u201cMaybe it won\u2019t be so bad if we add this\u2026\u201d She flipped a small plastic container back and forth. \u201c\u2026undetermined spread.\u201d One daring look from her was enough for Elliot to find the courage to give it a go as well.<\/p>\n

At their first bite, their eyes locked in suspense until they couldn\u2019t stop laughing. It tasted even worse than expected. And still, it felt amazing, as everything did with Lu. She made a face after taking a sip from her cup. \u201cDid you know we\u2019re not supposed to have coffee from a plane?\u201d He matched her grimace but drank his anyway. Dealing with Katrina would require all the caffeine he could get his hands on, even if it came from less-than-honorable sources.<\/p>\n

Allegedly. \u201cWhere did you hear this?\u201d \u201cI shouldn\u2019t say heard\u2014more like read.\u201d Lu pushed her cup aside. \u201cIt\u2019s easy to get into reading everything about anything when you can\u2019t hear that well.\u201d \u201cOr when you\u2019re not as distracted by noise as the rest of us,\u201d Elliot sup- posed. \u201cI wonder what that would be like.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot bad, to be honest.\u201d Lu smiled. \u201cI mean, I do wish everyone spoke with captions, but there are advantages to hearing less. I\u2019m a sound sleeper, for one.\u201d He swallowed hard, wondering where they\u2019d be sleeping in the next few days. Could they have been booked at the same lodge? He could think of worse things. But the worst-case scenario would be for Lu to become un- comfortable around him.<\/p>\n
