Luckily, I\u2019m just about sold out and the kids have melted back to their tables. I zip up my backpack and give him the wide-eyed, Nothing the matter here, officer look. But Hernandez is in no hurry to leave. He\u2019s got the sour look of a bust gone wrong. Standing over me. Staring. Daring me to say something. \u201cYou,\u201d he says finally.<\/p>\n

\u201cMake sure your lunch is only for you, just you, got it?\u201d He snaps his fingers, points, and strides off. Back at the sophomore benches, Gregg\u2019s laughing and Jules looks like someone died. \u201cYou\u2019re welcome,\u201d Cecilia sings. Gregg tells me, \u201cYou need better security, dude,\u201d and Jules\u2019s cheeks splotch red. \u201cI\u2019m sorry! I didn\u2019t see him. I\u2014I don\u2019t know what I was looking at,\u201d he says. \u201cOh, we know what you were looking at,\u201d Cecilia says, swinging her head toward me. A deep blush creeps up Jules\u2019s neck, invading his entire face, he won\u2019t look at me, but Cecilia and Gregg do, they\u2019re grinning\u2014what do they think they know, when there\u2019s nothing to know?<\/p>\n

If even Gregg thinks something\u2019s going on, Gregg, if it\u2019s penetrated the no-fly zone of his awareness, how many other people are thinking the same thing? I scan the lunch crowd\u2014is it my imagination, or does everyone seem to be looking in our direction, making that face you make when you scroll by photos of puppies on Instagram?<\/p>\n

Jules. What the hell. The bell rings. \u201cCome on, Grey-g-g.\u201d Cecilia yanks Gregg away fast, leaving me and Jules alone. \u201cThose guys,\u201d Jules says, and trails off. His face has gone from on fire to completely white\u2014I\u2019m afraid he\u2019s gonna pass out. \u201cSo, do you like watching basketball?\u201d he asks out of nowhere. It catches me off guard and I say the first thing that pops in my head because my brain is still five seconds ago and my mouth has to come up with something to say.<\/p>\n

\u201cUh, yeah. Sweaty guys in tank tops running around, why not?\u201d He swallows, his big Adam\u2019s apple bobbing up and down. \u201cWell, you know my first scrimmage is tomorrow, right? So, you could, if you wanted to, come . . . to watch.<\/p>\n
