Hellfire. \u201cThat bad?\u201d If I could shrink into myself any further, I would disappear. \u201cBelieve me,\u201d he snorts. \u201cThere were worse singers last night.\u201d \u201cThat means I was so bad I could be their queen!\u201d I groan. \u201cNo, Tess reigns supreme for sure. The Grand Empress of Bad Karaoke.\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t remember her even going up there.\u201d<\/p>\n

I scratch the side of my neck. \u201cHow do I not remember?\u201d \u201cWell, it\u2019s probably because you were too busy dancing.\u201d Nooooooooooo. Hellfire and broomsticks. I stop moving. Stop breathing. Stop eating, my fork mid-way up to my lips. \u201cPlease,\u201d I wheeze, my eye twitches. \u201cPlease tell me you\u2019re joking right now.\u201d Theo smirks, bringing his cup to his lips, shaking his head. \u201cAfraid not.\u201d I put the fork down on my plate, hands immediately cover my mouth.<\/p>\n

HORROR. The only thing worse than me singing in public, is me dancing in public. And so drunk I don\u2019t remember it. \u201cTheo,\u201d I whisper. \u201cI don\u2019t remember dancing at all.\u201d Theo stifles a laugh. \u201cCate -\u201d \u201cI can\u2019t show my face on this island ever again.\u201d The last time I went dancing was right after Derek broke up with me.<\/p>\n

Eve and Tommy insisted on me ditching the Cheeto stained pajamas I had been in for three days straight and go out with them. What started as us simply having dinner and drinks turned into us at a club dancing until two in the morning. And not just dancing. I was practically giving lap dances to anyone who gave me a second glance. If I danced last night just a fraction of the way I did with Eve and Tommy, then I would have to book myself a ticket back to Seattle immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cCate?\u201d Theo brings me back. \u201cIt was just dancing.\u201d \u201cNo such thing as,\u201d I use air quotes, \u201cjust dancing, with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He smiles and rushes toward me, unraveling the black scarf that strangles his neck. He must have the wrong Cate. His green eyes are dancing, and slightly panicked if I am picking up on his vibe right. He sits across from me, his knees knocking against the legs of the table we are apparently now sharing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere you are!\u201d He reclines in his chair, swiping a few rebellious strands of black hair out of his tan face. I look over my shoulder before setting my book on the table, my finger still holding my place. \u201cI\u2019m sorry, do we know each other?\u201d \u201cHere\u2019s the thing, Cate,\u201d he leans forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cMay I call you Cate?\u201d \u201cUh\u2026\u201d \u201cGreat!\u201d He pats the top of my hand and quickly continues before I can respond. \u201cThe thing is, Cate, I told my brother I couldn\u2019t grab lunch with him today because I was out with my girlfriend. Well, you see, he just spotted me outside and insisted on coming inside to meet said girlfriend.\u201d I blink twice and whisper, \u201cWhy are you telling me this, Mr. \u2026?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTheo.\u201d He extends his hand and I politely, although reluctantly shake it. \u201cTheo Bennett. Now the funny part of the story is I don\u2019t actually have a girlfriend. I just told my family I did so they\u2019d get off my back for a while.\u201d My eyes widen in realization, and I shake my head.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
