I know he\u2019s been away at his sailing competition\u2014or I guess they call it a regatta\u2014but I can\u2019t help my gaze flying to the doorway anytime someone in a jacket that looks remotely like a white windbreaker comes through it. Alice laughs as my shoulders slump at the sight of a girl from the junior team.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid he say how long he\u2019d be gone?\u201d she asks. I shake my head. \u201cHe said he\u2019d be back this weekend. But I don\u2019t know what day. I think it depends on how well the team performs and if they advance to the next round.\u201d \u201cText and ask him.\u201d I bite my lip. Things are still new with Ian, and I don\u2019t want him to think he can\u2019t go away for three days without me sending a barrage of texts asking when he\u2019ll be home. \u201cHe sounded super busy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe won\u2019t mind. He\u2019s obviously totally into you or he wouldn\u2019t be waiting around every day after your shift to take you out on the sailboat.\u201d She grins and nudges my arm. \u201cDid he mention the Fourth of July party yet?\u201d \u201cNo\u2026\u201d I shoot her a grin. \u201cBut his dad invited me to come and hang out at the pool.\u201d \u201cHis dad invited you?\u201d Alice\u2019s eyes bug out. \u201cChristopher Langley invited you to his house and you didn\u2019t tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I mean, Christopher mentioned it to Ian that day we had drinks. He said that Ian should have me over at the pool.\u201d Alice\u2019s gaze drifts past me. \u201cSpeaking of\u2026\u201d She clutches my arm. \u201cLook who just came in.\u201d I spin around and spot Susan leading Christopher to his regular table. \u201cThat\u2019s Lola\u2019s section today,\u201d Alice says. \u201cToo bad it\u2019s not yours. This would be the perfect opportunity to kiss up to your boyfriend\u2019s dad.\u201d She pauses with a conspiratorial grin.<\/p>\n

\u201cPromise I can be your date to the Fourth of July party.\u201d I open my mouth to say that Ian isn\u2019t my boyfriend, but then I remember the pressure of his chest against mine, the way his arms wrapped around my back to pull me onto his lap as the sailboat rocked beneath us, our lips colliding.<\/p>\n

The one place I swore I\u2019d never return to. I climb out of the driver\u2019s seat, hoping to get an idea of what\u2019s wrong with the car. But I lift the hood anyway, peering inside at the greasy coils of metal and tanks of fluid, waving away the smoke. Cars zip past on the road next to me, their trunks piled high with beach chairs, umbrellas, and coolers full of drinks. I\u2019m not bothered that nobody seems to want to stop for me. Their eagerness to get to their destination only highlights my reluctance. A few more cars pass before a pickup truck comes into view and pulls up behind me.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
