Then she called the police and Jackson in that order. The children and her mother gathered around, as the children wept at the thought of their father already dead. The police arrived first, followed two minutes later by the ambulance. They asked Linda a few questions, and then quickly released Angus to the medical team, which whisked him away to the hospital.

Linda left the children with her mother and hastily pulling on a dress, she jumped into Jackson’s car, and they flew down the road in pursuit of the ambulance. Instinctively, Jackson knew not to talk as they drove. They waited in the hospital emergency room for one agonizing hour before a doctor told them that Angus was stable, though very, very weak.

He had lost a lot of blood. A bullet had lodged somewhere in his left side, and they would have to operate to take it out. That, however, would have to wait until he was a bit stronger. Linda sank down in a chair, in relief. “Lord, I pray you please spare his life. So much seems to depend upon him,” she said. She waited in the hospital until four in the morning and fell asleep.

A nurse came in, shook her, and asked, “Are you Mrs. Chinnery?” Linda nodded. “Please come with me. Your husband is awake, and he is calling for you.” She followed the nurse as if in a trance until they arrived at the Intensive Care Ward. Angus lay propped up upon a pile of pillows, with tubes coming out from all over his body.

He was conscious, however, and said “Linda, my darling. All is well.” Then he slipped back into unconsciousness. His few words revived her spirit although she did wonder if he meant all was well with his soul, and he would still die. She waited by his side until five, and then she left the hospital telling the nurse that she would be back around eight.

Linda managed to find a taxi, and in a short while she was home.

No part of this book may be reproduced or transmitted in any form or by any means, graphic, electronic, or mechanical, including photocopying, recording, taping, or by any information storage retrieval system, without the permission, in writing, of the publisher.
