Don\u2019t worry-there\u2019s two bedrooms,\u2019 I told her, indicating the corridor with my hand. \u2018Oh I know there is-but I\u2019m going to suggest we don\u2019t use both,\u2019 she said, slowly. \u2018What? Why? I thought we just said we would avoid intimacy between us?\u2019 I questioned. \u2018I think we should-but I don\u2019t want to leave you alone during the night. When sleeping, we\u2019re all at our most vulnerable. As I\u2019m here to protect you, I won\u2019t be leaving you through the night alone.\u2019<\/p>\n

I stared at her. \u2018You\u2019re serious?\u2019 I questioned. \u2018Yeah,\u2019 she said, matter-of-factly. \u2018I\u2019ll sleep in there with you. The floor is fine\u2026\u2019 I shook my head, and then sighed with resignation. \u2018For Christ sake, Cassidy! I can\u2019t let you sleep on the floor! It\u2019s fine\u2026we\u2019ll sleep in the same room. It\u2019s a big, king size bed, at least! We can stay on each side!\u2019 I joked. \u2018Well, whatever-but you take my point?\u2019 she asked.<\/p>\n

\u2018I do and I don\u2019t. I understand that night-time is the time that we\u2019re at our most vulnerable but we\u2019re in the absolute middle of nowhere, Cassidy! Who the hell would know or be able to find me? And who would want to find me?\u2019 She shook her head. \u2018I don\u2019t know the answers to those questions, Ani.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m just keen to take precautions. We don\u2019t know what you\u2019re facing or what you\u2019re up against. Surely it makes sense to be cautious?\u2019 \u2018No, you\u2019re right. I forget too easily,\u2019 I said, letting the memories of how she found me come back.<\/p>\n

I felt myself drifting, far away from the here and now. I couldn\u2019t open my eyes, much less move. I was completely immobile and everything hurt. My thoughts were varied and everything was jumbled. I couldn\u2019t open my eyes. Why couldn\u2019t I open my eyes? I lost consciousness and floated around my head as I rested. The total, black oblivion encompassed my entire being. I could do nothing to help myself now.<\/p>\n

\u2018Can you hear me, lady? Hey! Hey!\u2019 a voice called. I groaned, the shouting in my ear hurting my head. \u2018Hey! Come on, wake up!\u2019 \u2018Urgh,\u2019 I managed, my voice coming out croaky and broken. \u2018The ambulance is on its way. Can you tell me your name?\u2019 the female voice asked. I tried to open my eyes but they felt heavy. \u2018Ur\u2026\u2019 was all that came out when I attempted to speak.<\/p>\n

\u2018Don\u2019t worry-hang in there. Help is on its way. You\u2019re going to be fine. I\u2019m not going to let anything happen to you,\u2019 the reassuring voice told me. I felt cold and my body was vibrating as I shivered hard. \u2018God, you\u2019re cold\u2026but I shouldn\u2019t move you,\u2019 she muttered to herself. \u2018It goes against procedure,\u2019 she continued, \u2018but better that than risk hypothermia in these freezing conditions.\u2019 I felt her hands reach beneath me and she lifted my upper body upwards with cold hands and then pulled me bodily onto her laps.<\/p>\n

Every little movement she made hurt me and I couldn\u2019t help the groan of sheer pain as I was lifted. \u2018I\u2019m sorry\u2026I\u2019m so sorry\u2026you\u2019re okay. You\u2019re okay,\u2019 she told me, even as if she was reassuring herself as well. The pain ebbed and I began to feel the heat of her body seeping into my cold veins.<\/p>\n

I had been so cold\u2026so cold. Now, I was beginning to thaw-and it felt so good to be against warm, soft flesh. She smelled like fresh laundry, all clean and intoxicating. I breathed long and slow, as my racing heart calmed a little. \u2018Don\u2019t worry. Help will be here soon\u2026we\u2019ll get you to the hospital,\u2019 she promised me.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
