Can\u2019t trust Micah or Sterling can we?\u201d Sterling is the owner of Cabinet Publishing\u2019s parent company, and I\u2019ve never actually met him. Apparently Stacy has, though. She gestures to a large old armchair that is upholstered in a rich burgundy velvet. There are two of them, facing each other and separated by a mahogany coffee table upon which is a tastefully arranged spread of Stacy\u2019s books in different translations, next to a vase of peach roses that have opened just to their peak bloom.<\/p>\n

Sunlight streams in through the large double window facing the street and I can hear dogs barking outside and a couple talking about going to the movies. It looks more like a Museum of Stacy in here than her residence. \u201cSo what\u2019s up, Stace?\u201d I say. I\u2019ve never called her that before but for some reason it comes out of my mouth that way, like we\u2019re old friends.<\/p>\n

\u201cAw, Stace is what my dear old aunt used to call me.\u201d She flashes a smile that has to be fake. \u201cLet me get the tea prepared first,\u201d she tells me, heading to the kitchen. \u201cI mustn\u2019t be a rude host.\u201d She leaves me sitting there and a minute later calls out, \u201cI have Earl Grey, green, oolong, and raspberry herbal\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEarl Grey is fine,\u201d I say. One particular picture frame catches my attention \u2013 it\u2019s the feature I got her in the syndicated magazine insert into hundreds of Sunday papers. She smiles broadly in the photo that I took of her standing in a fountain in an Atlanta park. I wrote the whole article myself and sent it to a few dozen media outlets before it was picked up by Parade.<\/p>\n

Sales of her first book took off after that, and boy was she ecstatic. Memories of that weekend come rushing back. Micah had told me to go fly down there and get some press on her because he felt she was the next big thing. I\u2019d read her manuscript and had to agree. It needed some editorial work, sure, but it was good.<\/p>\n

So I went. Stacy greeted me at the airport with a kiss on both cheeks followed by one right on the lips.<\/p>\n

If I knew it was going to be this bad, I might have reconsidered killing Andy. But it\u2019s done and I can\u2019t take it back. I\u2019ve just got to take a deep breath and try to get through each day until the furor eventually calms down and my life returns to normal.<\/p>\n

For right now, getting through today means being able to successfully back my Nissan down the thirty feet of my freshly paved asphalt driveway without killing anyone so I can go to the store and get some groceries before I starve to death. I\u2019ve been holed up at home by choice for the last few days, and I finally decided it\u2019s time to prove to myself that I am not going to be afraid to leave my house, that I am not going to be afraid to confront the protestors.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, one of them is standing at the end of my driveway with a big handwritten sign proclaiming me as a murderer. Not even figuratively, literally. I honk my horn in a polite, Hi there, can you please move fashion. The young blonde woman standing in my driveway apron does not budge. Instead, she raises her sign and unleashes a torrent of expletives at me.<\/p>\n

This is getting ridiculous. I honk again and continue backing up. Lord knows the last thing I want to do is run the girl over, but I am not going to be trapped in my own driveway on account of someone who is trespassing on my property. \u201cAndy was perfect!\u201d her sign says in part.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
