I put the keys in my pocket and said hello to several of the people living in the village. They knew me well, and I wished I could spend time with them today. I went to a friend, a sweet older woman, had a quick discussion about my truck, and she agreed to keep the kids from climbing on it. Kushim hovered nearby, watching everyone as carefully as they watched him. I grabbed my spear from the bed of my truck, and people gasped.

“Everything is fine,” I promised loudly, speaking in their local dialect for clarity. “Just protecting myself.” Several men and women nodded. I was at one of my homes in Zambia, looking over the savannah on private property my brother Jabari owned.

This was technically his territory, but he and I had shared everything over the years, with only a few notable exceptions. We were twins, so it only made sense that we were more comfortable living with each other than with anyone else. Not that we lived with anyone all that well, even our own father or mother, once we became adults. As werecats, my brother and I had a notable disposition that our werewolf cousins didn’t. Like all things, I knew there were exceptions, but the general rules applied most of the time.

Werewolves were the moon cursed supernatural species humans knew about. The brash, pack- based wolves, their Alphas, and their fights, living together and killing each other. They hunted together and fought together. When the full moon rose high in the sky, werewolves went out and ran together, their howls a symphony on the winds. Very rarely, a rogue wolf would run off to live alone. Werecats liked to live alone in a territory, a home to protect and guard, a piece of something of our own.

We liked a quiet life and keeping those we cared about right next to us, safe and secure. There weren’t many who could get close to a werecat. We didn’t have the same open hearts as the werewolves. When the full moon rose high, we shifted into giant feline predators and stalked our prey, alone and silent. Very rarely, a werecat would refuse to make a territory and wander.

Jabari and I were minor exceptions.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
