Deputy Director Green had just informed her of the deal he and Commander Bauer had made. With the arrival of the Khol apparently imminent, they had agreed to hand command of the base to Captain Harris so that he could draw up a defensive strategy without the frictions the different interests of both parties might generate. She knew that this was an enormous error, and that nothing she could say was going to change the decision.<\/p>\n

It was making her furious. \u200b\u201cI\u2019m really sorry, Emily,\u201d David told her. \u201cBut I had no choice.\u201d\u00b4 \u200b\u201cYou could\u2019ve refused.\u201d \u200b\u201cI don\u2019t think so. Captain Harris is very persuasive, and deep down he might be right and he might be the best one to draw up a defense.\u201d \u200b\u201cBut what are we going to do from now on?<\/p>\n

By this point the priorities of the project have changed radically, to the point that now we have only one.\u201d \u200bShe finished the sentence for him. \u201cLooking for an alternative to a possible defeat.\u201d \u200bDavid nodded. \u201cThat\u2019s right. So you\u2019ll have to find some way of taking everyone you consider necessary to the new base.\u201d \u200bEmily considered the plan that was beginning to take shape in her mind.<\/p>\n

Perhaps this change of events would be more helpful than it had seemed at first. Her stubbornness had blinded her to such an extent that she had not been aware of the positive side. If Captain Harris took command of the Magellan base, there would be no need for her to stay there any longer, which meant that she could move to Khapabir with the rest of her team to keep abreast of progress.<\/p>\n

Captain Tiffin immediately sent a probe to study the phenomenon, but it would take several hours to reach it. All they could do was wait. The previous time three probes had emerged from the anomaly; on this occasion nothing had appeared on the station sensors, or at least not yet. \u200bAll the same, the phenomenon had alarmed the members of the expedition. Captain Tiffin and his crew had got ready for any contingency that might endanger the station. Director Rhodes, the area managers and all non-military personnel had been evacuated to the shelter which had been built over the previous few months on a plateau in the south of the range.<\/p>\n

From the improvised command center in the lookout, Admiral N\u00e4rhi was working against the clock to organize the defense of the Armstrong base. \u200b\u201cReport, Lieutenant Rogers,\u201d she called. \u200b\u201cWe\u2019re in position,\u201d came the reply. \u201cWe\u2019ve placed the land vehicles along the base perimeter. We\u2019re waiting for new orders, admiral.\u201d \u200b\u201cThanks, lieutenant. Keep me informed.\u201d \u200bOn her terminal the admiral checked the positions of the armored vehicles. She had ordered them to be placed across the entire area of the base, even camouflaged among the prominent trees which surrounded it.<\/p>\n

Over the last few hours much of the military personnel had been brought out of cryostasis until all the station\u2019s vehicles and defense equipment had been put in place. Many of them had no experience in combat beyond the simulations and maneuvers they had been submitted to before forming part of the project. \u200b\u201cCommander Zhao,\u201d Admiral N\u00e4rhi called on the radio. \u201cWhat\u2019s the situation up there?\u201d \u200b\u201cSo far, all calm. We\u2019ve finished deployment of the defense squadrons, and we\u2019re waiting for orders.\u201d \u200b\u201cThank you, commander,\u201d \u200bThe admiral sighed and turned to her right.<\/p>\n
