Brenna held up her hand and he high-fived her. Her grin was contagious, and it didn\u2019t take long for Owen to forget the troublemakers he\u2019d had today as he slapped her hand and looked forward to a relaxing weekend. Lulu gave them an excited bark and circled around her owner as though wanting to join in. \u201cThis marks the halfway point,\u201d she said, sporting a casual outfit, unlike the clothing she wore a few weeks ago.<\/p>\n

She no longer looked like she wanted to hide. A gentle breeze brushed escaped wisps from her messy ponytail against her cheek. Even though volunteers milled about, his gaze mingled with Brenna\u2019s and the warm look she gave him zinged into his chest. Whoa, what was that? His eyes widened and he took a step away.<\/p>\n

He shook off what he feared might be attraction. He\u2019d only been without Willow for a few months. Well, five, but this interest in his high-school flame still seemed wrong. He didn\u2019t want to sully Willow\u2019s memory. Their afternoon volunteers, led by Hazel Murray, scurried off to the stables to start the cleanup process. For some reason, he and Brenna seemed content remaining in the shade of the pavilion.<\/p>\n

Brenna removed Lulu\u2019s vest and ruffled her fur. \u201cAre you as excited as we are, girl?\u201d The dog lowered the front half of her body to the ground in a playful stance, then zoomed around the pavilion. She was apparently just as happy as they were that they\u2019d made it to the halfway mark and a free weekend was before them.<\/p>\n

Except the excitement within Owen quickly morphed into worry. Three more weeks left of camp. The uncertainty about what he\u2019d do with his life continued to gnaw at him. He was a widower with an infant and no feasible job or home. Five months ago, he was working at a job he loved, was married to the love of his life, and had a bright future. That car accident had stolen his wife and changed everything. Had turned his life and expectations upside down. Brenna picked up a fuzzy tennis ball and threw it into the field beyond the pavilion.<\/p>\n

Lulu chased after it, returning with the ball and a grin. Evie, sitting in the front carrier on Owen\u2019s chest, kicked her feet. He ruffled her hair. She loved facing outward these days so she could see the action. Since his mother had a medical appointment, he\u2019d relieved her of her duties right before the afternoon pickup began and strapped Evie into the carrier.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy is it that dogs have such a deep, unconditional love?\u201d Brenna asked, her voice full of wonder. \u201cI mean, no matter how I act toward Lulu, whether I\u2019m having a bad day or whatever, she\u2019s always by my side.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStop it, Owen. I know you don\u2019t want me and you probably don\u2019t need me.\u201d Lulu pushed her nose at Brenna and she encircled her dog\u2019s neck to give her a big hug. \u201cAnyway,\u201d she continued, \u201cit\u2019s probably just as hard on you to be around me all day. Every day.\u201d \u201cBrenna, my mother told me that you need to help run camp. You have reasons, but she wouldn\u2019t explain.\u201d She swallowed and started to play with her fidget rings.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think I could live with myself if I didn\u2019t help an old friend in need.\u201d He lowered his voice. \u201cWe were friends once, weren\u2019t we?\u201d \u201cWe were. I hope we still are.\u201d She rested her hands on her lap and met his eyes. \u201cSo I guess you deserve an explanation.\u201d She blew out a breath as though she were about to tell him something important.<\/p>\n
