While most established operators can supply cylinders and mixed gases, bringing personal regulators, computers, and exposure protection ensures familiarity and reliability. Liveaboards often provide the best access to remote technical sites, allowing appropriate surface intervals and logistical flexibility.

Technical diving in Asia and Oceania goes far beyond what we can present in these pages, offering experiences few recreational divers will ever encounter. This is by no means a comprehensive catalogue of Asia–Pacific technical diving; the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, New Zealand and several emerging regions, among many others, all offer equally compelling advanced dives for those prepared to seek them out. From pristine wrecks frozen in time, to deep walls adorned with corals adapted to low light, to the quiet intensity of blue-water descents – all these dives carry inherent risks, but for well-trained, properly equipped divers, the region delivers truly world-class technical exploration.

As a tek diver, there’s no substitute for proper training and preparation Shutterstock The term “technical diving” is often used loosely, but in Asia and Oceania it carries very specific implications. Many dives that appear “only slightly deeper” than recreational limits rapidly escalate in complexity due to remoteness, currents, and limited emergency infrastructure. In this region, a dive may reasonably be considered technical if it involves: Closed-circuit rebreathers (CCR) have transformed technical diving across Asia and Oceania, particularly on deep wrecks and walls. Their advantages are clear: extended bottom times, reduced gas logistics, and optimal decompression efficiency.

However, the region presents unique challenges for CCR divers: Crucially, environmental factors amplify risk. Strong tidal currents in Indonesia or Palau, thermoclines in Chuuk Lagoon, or freshwater haloclines in Thai cave systems can significantly affect gas consumption, buoyancy, and task loading. As a result, divers often adopt technical configurations even on dives that sit near the boundary between advanced recreational and true technical profiles. Many experienced technical divers in the region operate hybrid strategies – using CCR for deep primary dives while retaining open-circuit bailout strategies tailored to local conditions.

Successful CCR diving here relies less on cutting-edge technology and more on conservative decision-making, redundancy, and disciplined pre-dive checks.

As part of ADEX’s commitment to marine sustainability, entrants must adhere to ethical photographic principles, including capturing animals in their natural habitats exhibiting naturally occurring behaviour Images: VOO 2025 winners, runners-up and short-listed entries Organised by Official Publication SUBMISSION PERIOD DEC 10, 2025 – MAR 10, 2026 Hosted by Sponsors www.adex.asia CATEGORIES Animal Behaviour Blackwater Conservation Smartphone Ocean Planet (Drone / Over-Under Photography) Underwater Arts (Underwater Model Photography / Artwork) Short Film Portfolio • • • • • • • • ADEX PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR (PORTFOLIO) 7PM–4AM APRIL 11, 2026 OCEAN FASHION WEEK (SINGAPORE) LIVE!

SUPPORTING PARTNER HALL 401–402 www.adex.asia INTERNATIONAL OCEAN WEEK ARTS, FILM & MUSIC FESTIVAL WAVE OF HOPE FOR THE OCEAN SINGAPORE OCEAN WEEK OFFICIAL HOTEL Marty Snyderman Marine Photojournalist Member since 1988 Kayla Feairheller President & Founder Blue World Member since 2021 Thomas Bauer Recreational Diver Member since 2003 Cristina Calderon Signature Dive Veterans Member since 2017 Paul McQuigg Dive Professional The WAVES Project Member since 2015 Kelly Park PADI IDC Staff Instructor Member since 2013 S A F E T Y – M E D I C A L – R E S E A R C H – E D U C A T I O N – D I V E A C C I D E N T A S S I S T A N C E EVERY DIVER SHOULD BE A World.DAN.org For over 40 years DAN has helped divers, like you, in need of emergency medical assistance and has prepared millions of divers for a lifetime of safe diving.

That’s why every diver should be a DAN member.
