Corey starts to shake his head rapidly as he tells me, \u201cBaby, NO! That\u2019s not\u2026 Jesus!\u201d He pulls his hair and I swallow, afraid of what\u2019s coming next. Anthony stands up, raising his voice. \u201cJust STOP! Stop apologizing!\u201d I\u2019m terrified now, leaning back in my chair in an attempt to back away from the rage pouring off all of them.<\/p>\n

My throat closes after I only get out, \u201cDamnit Tony, sit the fuck down! She thinks you\u2019re yelling at HER!\u201d Bryant snaps at him. Looking at him, I\u2019m surprised to see him seething. Anthony and Corey are staring at me with narrowed eyes. Corey looks at the other two and says, \u201cI told you\u2026\u201d and then back to me. He asks, \u201cWhy do you think we want you to apologize to us, kitten?\u201d \u201cUmm\u2026\u201d I say as Anthony huffs out a frustrated breath and sits back down, muttering something to himself I can\u2019t make out.<\/p>\n

He seems so much more bitter and angry than he used to be. \u201cSweetheart,\u201d Bryant calls, catching my attention. \u201cYou keep apologizing to us like we think you\u2019ve done something wrong. You have to know that you haven\u2019t. You didn\u2019t do ANYTHING wrong here. That\u2019s what we\u2019ve been trying to tell you.\u201d \u201cBut I did!\u201d I blurt out. He jolts a little and then rubs his hands on his pant legs before leaning forward, like he\u2019s getting ready for something. \u201cTell me what you did, baby,\u201d he demands.<\/p>\n

Anthony and Corey are waiting for my answer as well. Why are they wanting me to explain this? It\u2019s so unbelievably embarrassing to list it all out. Do they want me to say everything? I turn as my face heats to what I\u2019m sure is an unflattering red. It takes me a while to get all of my thoughts organized, and they don\u2019t push me. When I begin to speak, they listen as I lay out all of my faults and sins; the ones that hurt them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t do anything right\u2026 that night, or before. I shouldn\u2019t have dragged you to that party. You all were so mad about going\u2026 and I get it. Those people were horrible. I had just hoped\u2026 hoped that since we had graduated, all of that was behind us.\u201d I swallow deeply before continuing. \u201cBut I didn\u2019t listen about making sure other people didn\u2019t see us like that. All together, I mean\u2026 being too provocative\u2026 teasing the other boys at school. I wasn\u2019t trying to, I promise.<\/p>\n

Of course they thought differently of me than the other girls. I was dating three boys at once.\u201d I chuckle without humor and say more to myself than them, \u201cIt was selfish of me, selfish to have made you feel so uncomfortable for so long.<\/p>\n
