I like to keep some elements a little transparent, so that the spray texture shows through and adds to the layered effect.

I’ve also used a Liquitex Paint Marker in fluorescent pink to add some flowing lines representing abstract foliage. I love how these markers have a translucent effect. ▸ Now I start to add in the white elements. Using a small flat brush, I keep this quite loose and light. Some areas will be left white and for these, I have marked out more defined shapes. For other areas where I will be adding another colour over the top, I have left it more translucent.

I also like to keep some of the background showing through. Wait for the white to dry before adding more colour on top. Still using the flat brush, I start to add in some colour – I’m using mainly Winsor & Newton Cadmium Orange with a touch of Liquitex Gold. The white underneath helps to make these colours pop more, and again this process can be quite loose.

I like to play with the bush strokes and texture here, too. I switch up brushes to my script (or liner) brush and making sure all of the elements underneath are dry, I load my brush well with paint, before carefully pulling it in long, slow strokes to create my sharp, flowing lines. I’ve used Liquitex soft body paints (which flow more easily) in White for the outlines of the tiger and fish, and the ‘connecting’ landscape lines in Brilliant Yellow Green, Bright Aqua Green and Gold.

I’ve also used this brush for the tiger stripes and face details. Using the liner brushes, I’ve added in more foliage around the tiger. This last step for me is about creating a final balance in the composition, making sure I’m happy with the way the colour, shapes and overall composition flow.

Finally, a few sweeps of the Liquitex Fluro marker on the tiger and flowers add an extra pop of colour, and the piece is complete! ▫ Using a flat brush, I start to add in sharp elements in black, including sweeping strokes for branches and some shapes within the body of the tiger. These are typical features of my work, and I love this point where the sharper, flatter colours start to contrast with the softer background elements.

The liner brushes take a bit of practice, I found.

“Distanciation”, 55 x 39 inches, Nitram Charcoal, sanguine & chalk “Bold.
