Noah was too busy to come along, so it was just the three of us. It had been a long day, and a walk by the water was just what I needed. The boardwalk was always lively on a Friday night— families with strollers, couples holding hands, teenagers in groups laughing loudly, restless for the coming longer days of summer. The scent of fried dough and grilled seafood drifted through the air.

I was happy for Chloe. She deserved someone good, and from what I could tell, Logan fit the bill. We had gone to school with him, but back then, he had been quiet and reserved, barely more than a shadow in the background of our high school years. If you had asked me then, I wouldn’t have been able to tell you much about him at all. These days, though, he wasn’t quite so shy. He still had that thoughtful, observant nature about him, but he had grown into himself in a way that made him more confident.

He spoke up in conversations now, cracked jokes at just the right moments, and seemed completely at ease with Chloe. And Chloe loved every minute of being with him. As we strolled along the boardwalk, Chloe and Logan walked hand in hand, their fingers loosely intertwined. I walked beside them, keeping pace on the other side of Chloe. The sun was sinking lower, painting the sky in soft hues of pink and orange, the reflection shimmering across the water. A musician with a guitar had set up near a cluster of picnic tables, strumming a tune that blended with the sound of seagulls and the distant crash of waves.

Chloe suddenly turned to me, her eyes gleaming with curiosity. “Have you ever been to a fortune teller?” The question caught me off guard. I glanced at her, then shook my head. “No, I can’t say that I have. Why?” The conversation I’d had with Roger Ericson this morning sprang to mind. We had discussed it earlier, but the shop had been so busy, we hadn’t talked about it again.

She shrugged, the movement casual, but there was something speculative in her expression. “Remember the day Bree broke up with Jace?” I nodded. “Sure.” Chloe continued, “Tanya made that comment about you and Noah being together forever. And then while looking at Bree, she made a comment about some people weren’t meant to be together.”

I remembered.

Copyright © 2025 by Kathleen Suzette. The woman on the other side of the counter, somewhere in her forties with short brown hair, beamed as she accepted it. “That looks divine. Such a gorgeous shade of red.”

She turned the cone slightly, admiring it. “Thank you.” I smiled. “Enjoy.” She stepped aside, making her way toward the register, where Chloe, my best friend since we were toddlers, was ready to ring her up. The steady hum of the ice cream case filled the brief lull, the scent of freshly baked cookies hanging in the air.

Outside, the sun streamed through the large front window, casting warm golden light over the wrought-iron chairs and tables that gave Cookie’s Creamery its signature charm.
