In spite of Billy Graham, this is not a \u2018Western idea\u2019. It is the object of Korean Christians for Korea. When Christianity came to Korea, the Japanese came, too, only a little later. After 1905 the Japanese occupying power wanted to eradicate the Korean language and to \u2018Japanologize\u2019 Korean culture. During the era of Japanese oppression, the young Christian church put itself on the side of the people.<\/p>\n

In Seoul, in the Pagoda Park, stands the monument commemorating the revolt against the Japanese of 1919, in which lay Christians were prominently involved. Consequently, white people are not hated in Korea, and Christianity does not count as a religion of white people, as it does, for example, in China and Japan. The missionary initiative of the Christian church in Korea is accompanied by a quite unusual prayer movement. During the evangelizations, most of the churches in Seoul were full to overflowing every morning with people who had come to pray.<\/p>\n

There are prayer services at sunrise on the hills all over the country. Last winter the Catholic cathedral of Seoul and the square in which it stands were full every morning with people who had come to pray for Christians who were in prison. The passion of prayer can be sensed everywhere, in churches, seminaries, and private houses. It is a power which convinces the people, and a liberating force of resistance against the political mistrust. \u2018In Korea there is no political freedom\u2019; that can be heard and seen everywhere.<\/p>\n

When I left Seoul on 13 March, the last free newspaper, Dong- A, had been brought under government control, under dramatic circumstances\u2014dismissals, hunger strikes, popular protests, and mass arrests. Dong-A, \u2018the voice of Asia\u2019, had lost all its advertisements the previous year, under government pressure. Afterwards private people had supported the paper with advertisements incorporating poems and epigrams.<\/p>\n
