But the search committee probably will want to plan to place regular reports in the parish newsletter or on a bulletin board. Premature \u201cleaks\u201d can be damaging to con- tinuing negotiations as well as to the candidates under consideration. Step Five: Decision\/Negotiation The double name of this step gives evidence of the fact that things get tense-and-interconnected as you get closer to the end of the journey to a new pastor. These two actions of deci- sion and negotiation interpenetrate one another for quite some time.<\/p>\n

It is possible for this to muddy things up\u2014a good con- sultant can help keep the action clear. You see, the decision about the \u201cright\u201d candidate actually begins the first time the committee decides to drop a name from the list of active prospects. It occurs months before the final decision. And as the committee moves through its life and their actions move \u201cdown\u201d the pyramid, dozens of deci- sions are made. Each one helps clarify what it understands the self-study to mean and how the group defines the kind of leadership it is looking for.<\/p>\n

These decisions are negative deci- sions: By saying \u201cno\u201d to this or these candidates we are say- ing \u201cyes\u201d to others and to another direction.<\/p>\n
