\u201cNot just the maintenance guy.\u201d \u201cIf you\u2019re looking for motives,\u201d the man said, with a harsh laugh, \u201cyou have a long list of characters. In security you don\u2019t make many friends, not with all that goes on around here.\u201d An hour later, the private investigator returned to them with his findings. The maintenance man had an alibi for the entire shift.<\/p>\n

He had been working with another employee, fixing a ride on the other side of the park. \u201cIf he had an alibi, why was he so evasive?\u201d Pauline said, puzzled. \u201cHe runs a small scam and was afraid you\u2019d latch onto that,\u201d the detective said. \u201cI\u2019m just waiting for him to slip up big one of these days, and I\u2019ll nail him on all the petty stuff.<\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t been able to narrow down who his accomplices are yet, they are always in costume.\u201d \u201cI would think that is something the authorities should already be aware of,\u201d Pauline commented offhand. Nona harrumphed, \u201cBack to square one. Let\u2019s eat.\u201d Sitting in a booth that resembled a brightly colored cartoon space capsule from the 1960s, the two women discussed the case over chocolate milkshakes at Granny\u2019s Galactic Goodies.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is possible it could be the waste collection workers, and we have yet to interrogate the rest of the security personnel,\u201d Pauline speculated. \u201cI doubt it\u2019s the waste collection employees. My money is on his disgruntled staff in the security office.\u201d \u201cOkay, what do we know? No signs of hit-and-run trauma, no physical wounds except for some minor burns? And the likely suspect had an alibi,\u201d Pauline said.<\/p>\n

Nona sucked on her shake straw, making a slurping noise when she got to the bottom of the cup. \u201cThe shake was a pleasant treat, but with free meals, you could not have picked a place with actual food?\u201d Pauline questioned. \u201cDessert first,\u201d was all Nona said. After a long pause of contemplation, Nona broke the silence and said, \u201cI read they have this automatic vacuum system for the waste collection.<\/p>\n

Maybe you are onto something. Maybe it was them.\u201d \u201cI don’t know how that could have killed the man, especially the way his body was positioned in the Cortility?\u201d Pauline replied. Shrugging, Nona said, \u201cYeah, I guess you are right. Do you have any other theories?\u201d \u201cSadly, no. Maybe we should head out and enjoy the park,\u201d Pauline responded. \u201cYes, a ride on Space Cliff should provide some inspiration.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou do realize that is a rollercoaster . . . completely in the dark?\u201d Pauline scoffed. \u201cI think there is an age limit for those rides.\u201d \u201cPishposh!\u201d Nona uttered as she stood up to leave.<\/p>\n
