He\u2019d expected pushback from Jason. Spiteful pride or dismissal. Instead, the Necromancer had thought about it for a moment\u2026 then agreed. Which was why Alex found himself here beneath this rubble, staring at reports that revealed an uncomfortable truth: he didn\u2019t want to send this report to George. What would George do if he sent this report? How would he twist or subvert Alex\u2019s strategy? Would he order him to stay with Jason? To avoid taking this risk? Would he never get to see if his plan actually worked?<\/p>\n

And how would that affect his relationship with Jason\u2014this fragile, delicate thing he\u2019d built for himself? What the hell happened to me? He wondered. Am I really worried about losing a relationship with Jason\u2014? Alex froze as his UI dinged. Ironically, it was a message from the necromancer. It was time. Jason\u2019s Drones, hidden among the swaying grasses that ringed the barren patch of earth around the dungeon, had detected movement. Light mana. Which meant the Nephilim patrol was here.<\/p>\n

Swallowing hard, Alex swept aside the report and forced himself to focus. Only moments later, the Nephilim touched down outside the village, Jason feeding him information through their chat. Alex couldn\u2019t risk responding\u2014not yet. The Nephilim search party moved cautiously through the ruins, and Alex kept one half-lidded eye open. Their radiant forms cast faint light against the broken stone and crystal, their movements carrying that same detached arrogance Alex had once worn like armor.<\/p>\n

They surveyed the wreckage as if the world itself existed for their convenience. Their eyes scanned the wreckage for survivors with clinical efficiency. Alex remained motionless, waiting. Anticipation thrummed beneath his skin\u2014not quite fear, not quite excitement; something between terror and exhilaration. A pulse of light mana rippled outward from one of the soldiers, washing over the ruins in a shimmering wave.<\/p>\n

It illuminated broken stone and shattered lives in sharp relief, every crack and crevice briefly outlined in pale gold. The spell swept through Alex, making his skin crawl with tingling awareness. Already, the casting Nephilim was pointing in his direction. The spell had detected his mana signature.<\/p>\n

First off, I\u2019m so sorry for the long delay after Timeless. I got caught up in a new project called Hollow, which is probably the craziest thing I\u2019ve written to date. That wouldn\u2019t have been so bad, but then I also hurt my hand\u2026 which turned into a nightmare. The short version is that my original doctor misdiagnosed me for the better part of a year, and I ended up needing surgery for a complete tendon tear (which took more than five months to schedule).<\/p>\n

The U.S. healthcare system is just awesome. No notes. After 6 months of recovery, I\u2019m almost back to normal strength with only a small loss of range of motion, but I can type now! And, you know, I\u2019m no longer living with chronic pain\u2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
