Joan nodded to me and said, \u201cI\u2019ll just run Tillie back inside while you talk to Tom.\u201d The shepherd sat quietly as the two of them stopped in front of me, turning his head toward Tom as if awaiting the next instruction. \u201cHey, Maddie. Good to see you.\u201d \u201cHey, Tom, good to see you too,\u201d I answered. I would\u2019ve given him a hug, but felt it would interfere with his work with the shepherd.<\/p>\n

\u201cPoor Tillie. How is she doing?\u201d \u201cOkay, although she wasn\u2019t for a couple of days. My aunt is going to take her in a few days when she gets back into town. She\u2019ll be a great home for Tillie, so that\u2019s a relief.\u201d Whew. \u201cUh, hey, Tom, I know you\u2019re busy, but I\u2019m desperate to find this shepherd I told you about. I was hoping you\u2019d have some ideas about where to look next.\u201d \u201cMakes no sense, Maddie. The word would have gone out in a minute if a working K9 was lost, and I\u2019d have heard about it the same day.<\/p>\n

You said you found him by the road outside Milwaukee?\u201d \u201cNot me, but a shelter volunteer. I took him out of the shelter to foster him, and that\u2019s when he was stolen.\u201d \u201cJesus. Someone sure wants that dog back.\u201d Tom raised and lowered his yellow and black Brewers cap, snugging it over his hair. \u201cSure you want to get involved?\u201d \u201cI am involved. My house was broken into and Bo Peep was poisoned, for God\u2019s sake.\u201d I could hear my voice rising. I took a breath. \u201cI\u2019m going to find that dog, Tom.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not giving up.\u201d I stood silent for a moment, looking into Tom\u2019s face; his eyes shaded from the sun by his cap. \u201cPlease, Tom, any ideas?<\/p>\n
