My skin twitches, shadows seeping up my fingernails. More mages? How the hell are they even getting in? Stepping back, I peek over the rim of my glass, between a couple sharp shoulder blades and suit coats, seeking out the stink. I find them halfway down the table, a young and stupid pair of them eyeing a selection of bright little cakes. \u201cIt can\u2019t all be poison, right?\u201d With five conversating bodies between them and me, I can only hear half of every word, have to pick the rest off their lips.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wouldn\u2019t be that brazen.\u201d \u201cNot poison. Every crumb just costs a couple years,\u201d the other says. He steps away from the table, angling his body so he can see both the door and the wall of windows. In turn, I can see his face. When his buddy won\u2019t stop picking at the cake plates, he grabs him by the elbow, tugging him away.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeave it, would you? I don\u2019t want to have to explain to Thurston how you went and compromised yourself the day before Ransom Wyatt shows up.\u201d Darkness gloves my whole hand, creeping clear up to my shoulder. I don\u2019t recognize the name, but the worshipful curl of his lips sends a shiver down my spine. I inch closer, scooting down along the table like I\u2019m hunting for canapes. \u201cNot Wyatt, surely. He\u2019s been in the wind for years, following those rotten bones of his.<\/p>\n

An Iron Unnatural? It\u2019s a myth if you ask me. He\u2019ll never find it.\u201d \u201cDecrypted the telegrams myself. Wyatt arrives tomorrow.\u201d He leans in, so close I can barely hear him. \u201cIt\u2019s not a myth; it\u2019s here and Thurston\u2019s scared\u2060\u2014\u201d \u201cMen in position on 26th and 27th, Captain,\u201d a man says behind me, eager mean, drowning out the rest. \u201cThat\u2019s the last of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

I wheel around. People peel away from the table in droves, others piling in\u2014I can\u2019t figure out who said it. Shoving my way to the nearest wall, I leap up on a chair. Eyes blaze awake in my hairline, pepper my cheeks, my wrists, my raised hands.<\/p>\n

Still, I can\u2019t find them. Worse, I can\u2019t find a single blue suit, even just one double breast of iron buttons. The police left.<\/p>\n
