Elizabeth did not make her linger for a response. A return messenger arrived just before dinner. Georgina, who was about to lead her father into the dining-room, snatched the missive off the tray with fervour. Her father regarded her with an inquisitive look. \u201cAre you expecting some urgent correspondence, Georgina?\u201d Not wishing to draw undue attention, Georgina stuffed the unopened letter into her pocket and determined to wait until after dinner to read it.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow are Lord Coulthurst and Mrs Fortescue? They have not been loitering about the place as much as they used to,\u201d Silas asked, as they enjoyed a delicious repast laid out before them. \u201cThey are unchanged. Sarah continues to pine for love, while Colt is a rogue towards every young lady in his path.\u201d Georgina shrugged. \u201cAnd have you heard from that young lady who caused you a headache in Cornwall?\u201d He was paying a lot of attention to his dinner plate. Georgina grinned at his attempts at discretion.<\/p>\n

\u201cI appreciate your delicate phrasing. Indeed, I have heard from her several times. She has sent me messages, left me her card, attempted to find me at assorted clubs, and we have danced at a ball.\u201d The fork slipped from Silas\u2019s fingers with a clatter. He picked it up quickly. \u201cA most eager girl.\u201d \u201cShe would benefit from a little discretion, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n

He resumed eating. \u201cAnd how is Edmund?\u201d This drew a sigh from her. \u201cLovelorn, of course. And extremely careless.\u201d \u201cKeep an eye on him, my love. His parents will expect you to.\u201d Georgina clenched the serviette on her lap. \u201cI am doing my best, Papa,\u201d she assured him. Had Edmund\u2019s parents perhaps performed their duty more thoroughly and educated him in the ways of the world, she would not presently be in this untenable situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, tell me about this little fellow we have downstairs? James, is it?\u201d \u201cJoshua. He is our new \u2026 page\u2014house boy. Whatever we need him to be, really.\u201d Silas scratched his chin. \u201cDid we need him?\u201d \u201cWell, naturally we did, Papa,\u201d Georgina replied. \u201cOr he would not be here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Explaining Joshua\u2019s arrival was difficult enough without bringing up Elizabeth. He shrugged and chatted about other members of the ton he had seen since returning to town at the start of the week, and Georgina\u2019s thoughts drifted back to the letter concealed in her pocket. Finally, when Silas departed for his evening\u2019s engagement at the theater and Georgina retired to her library, she had a moment alone. She pulled the note from her pocket, snapped the wafer open, and her eyes tracked the handful of words on the page.<\/p>\n

My inclusive and colourful historical romance novels are a new twist on an old theme. All are welcome here. A Change of Pace is set in a reimagined Regency London. In this world, trans and queer identities are not shunned nor hidden away, racism does not reign, and people with disabilities and neurodivergence are valued members of society. As you read this book, you might ask yourself, \u201cIf we could rewrite history to be fully embracing of human diversity, how would the world be a better place today?\u201d<\/p>\n

I never mean to minimise or deny the true histories experienced by marginalised people. Because we live inside these very real and entrenched systems of oppression, I wish to provide a whimsical and not-so-realistic reading experience for all to enjoy. My goal is to offer a softer, kinder\u2014 though not perfect\u2014trajectory for protagonists who might otherwise have lacked an invitation to the ball. Deliberately, this is a world and history where certain painful conflicts simply did not exist. As a cisgender white woman, I am privileged to be able to see myself reflected in the many thousands of regency romance heroines depicted throughout literary history.<\/p>\n

However, I am also a member of the LGBTQI+ community; a person with Autism (ASD); a partner to an amazing transgender woman; and the mother of a beautiful \u00addaughter with Down Syndrome. Not all readers can easily imagine themselves as a main character, swooning over a dashing hero and getting a happily-ever-after to sigh over. Realising that my daughter and my partner belonged to demographics that history either excluded or punished for being themselves, I decided to create an alternate history for my family\u2014and for you, Reader\u2014to enjoy.<\/p>\n
