She leans forward. \u2018Are you ready for that?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Space between them like a taut rope. I can feel him being pulled away, out of reach. I cannot bear to lose anyone else. I scramble to my feet. \u2018What about the guild, Crann? My learning?\u2019 He scoffs. \u2018You know they\u2019ll never take me. And as for your stars \u2026 People like us, R\u00e9, all we get is hunger.\u2019 He shakes his head, and for a moment he looks much older. A grown adult. Realistic. Hard. \u2018Crann,\u2019 I say, stepping in front of him. \u2018What about our father?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Crann\u2019s body finally loosens. \u2018I know,\u2019 he says. And to the circle: \u2018My sister\u2019s right. We are needed at home.\u2019 The girl nods. \u2018Will you swear an oath?\u2019 \u2018Anything.\u2019 Bud thrusts a bunch of weeds into our hands. \u2018You must swear by the forest.\u2019 We clench our fists, and the weeds burn our palms. A stinging plant. We hold ourselves against the pain. Crann does not show it, but I shake and tears run down my cheeks. The boy waits for us to speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We swear by the forest. We\u2019ll never give you away.\u2019 The Mother gestures with a nod: enough. Ash takes my hand and blows on the redness. Within moments, the pain is gone completely. She touches my palm with a gentle finger, traces the way. \u2018Follow the bone road into the woods. Keep the wolves on your left,\u2019 she pulls at my thumb, \u2018and stay with the oldest trees.<\/p>\n<p>When you hear water, follow the stream to the pool.
