Anyway, it was only after the film came out that there was any sense of rivalry and even then we stayed friends.\u2019 \u2018It must have been difficult when you were both up for BAFTAs.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Not really. That happened a couple of years later and although we \u2019d stayed in touch, we hardly saw each other. Both our careers had taken off. I was doing a lot of work in Los Angeles and South Africa . . . that was where we shot Mad Max. David was mainly in the UK. But you\u2019re right. We both got nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the BAFTAs in the same year.<\/p>\n<p>He was up for Forty Years On and I was there for The Hateful Eight which I\u2019d done with Quentin Tarantino. He \u2019s an amazing man. A ball of energy. And he \u2019s a brilliant writer.\u2019 The waiter arrived at the table with our first course, the prawns arranged with their heads poking out of a wine glass, their bodies disappearing into a mess of lettuce, avocado and Marie Rose sauce.<\/p>\n<p>Ralph reached for his fork but he didn\u2019t eat. \u2018The BAFTA thing was a bit awkward, I must say,\u2019 he went on. \u2018But neither of us knew who\u2019d won so it wasn\u2019t as if we had anything to fight over and he couldn\u2019t have been more pleased to see me.\u2019 He paused. \u2018I\u2019ll never forget that night. I was a barrel of nerves and if it hadn\u2019t been for David, I\u2019m not sure I\u2019d have even made it onto the stage.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018So what happened?\u2019 I asked. \u2018What do you mean?\u2019 He sounded offended. \u2018I heard you weren\u2019t well.\u2019 He stared at me. \u2018You must know.\u2019 \u2018No. Teresa said I should ask you. I might have been away that year, on a book tour or something, but I was never very interested in the BAFTAs.<\/p>\n<p>I could look it up, I suppose, but although I know there was some sort of fuss, I can\u2019t remember reading anything.\u2019 \u2018To be honest with you, Anthony, I\u2019d rather talk about something else.\u2019 \u2018I\u2019m sorry, Ralph.
