You\u2019d just receive them from an unknown contact.\u201d He paused for a beat. \u201cYou blocked me.\u201d \u201cYou flatter yourself.\u201d I tried to keep casual, but my voice told the truth, its octave skyrocketing up into the heavens.<\/p>\n

Marco gave me a crooked, almost amused look. \u201cWas it really necessary to jump to that extreme?\u201d Yes, it was. Because for some reason, I hadn\u2019t been able to deal with his radio silence in our chat. It gave me agita whenever I looked at it, which was weirdly a lot. And so I\u2019d deleted our thread, but that hadn\u2019t been enough, either. I didn\u2019t trust myself not to open a new message and apologize to him. Because in all honesty, even if it made me sound immature, I still believed I deserved the apology.<\/p>\n

We stood there in silence for a few moments before Marco let me get away with silently pleading the fifth. \u201cI had some free time today,\u201d he said, \u201cand since I had no way of contacting you, I thought I\u2019d stop over.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m touched.\u201d I put my hand to my heart. \u201cYou could\u2019ve slid into my DMs.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t block you on Instagram.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m not sure I follow you on Instagram,\u201d he replied just as dryly. I knew he was kidding; his lips were twitching in a smile. \u201cAnd that\u2019s not my style anyway.\u201d \u201cSeriously?\u201d I started dribbling the field hockey ball at my foot with my stick. \u201cYou\u2019re telling me you didn\u2019t DM\u201d\u2014a sour taste filled my mouth before I said her name\u2014\u201cShelly after hooking up with her at some party or whatever?\u201d \u201cNo,\u201d Marco said lightly. \u201cI met her at an athletic department event and asked for her number.\u201d<\/p>\n

He paused. \u201cYou really think I\u2019m an asshole, don\u2019t you?\u201d I shrugged. \u201cMore of a dickhead.\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s the difference?\u201d \u201cAssholes are aware they\u2019re jerks,\u201d I said. \u201cDickheads mostly have no idea how they come off; they\u2019re dumb.\u201d Marco chuckled. \u201cOkay, I\u2019ll accept the title.\u201d \u201cYou might aspire to rid yourself of it,\u201d I mumbled. It went silent between us for a few moments before Marco spoke. \u201cWe\u2019re not together anymore.<\/p>\n
