I thought he could work with you while Sienna is on holiday,\u201d Gemma said. Ellie blinked, then immediately brightened. \u201cOh, brilliant. Have you worked in a caf\u00e9 before?\u201d \u201cNah, but I\u2019m a fast learner,\u201d Ryan said.<\/p>\n

Gemma turned to face Ryan. \u201cEllie\u2019s the caf\u00e9 manager. She\u2019ll show you what to do and help you settle in.\u201d Ellie met Ryan\u2019s gaze and held it a fraction longer than politeness required, her smile softening as though she\u2019d remembered something pleasant. Gemma wasn\u2019t an expert, though it seemed Cupid\u2019s aim had been precise. \u201cI\u2019ll make us all a coffee before we open?\u201d Ellie said, and she led Ryan towards the caf\u00e9. The sound of their voices faded into the rattle and hiss of the coffee machine.<\/p>\n

Mavis arrived at five to nine on the dot, as she always did. She wore a lime-green cardigan matched with a triple-strand pearl necklace. She deposited her handbag under the counter and immediately began rearranging the staff picks table, muttering about the relative merits of Val McDermid and Ann Cleeves. By ten, there had already been plenty of customers in the shop: the usual mix of retired locals, parents with prams and the occasional student.<\/p>\n

A bit after eleven, a young woman hovered by the front display, inspecting the books on display before she made her way to the counter. She looked to be in her early twenties, with her hair in a messy bun and wearing a Derby University hoodie. \u201cHi,\u201d the woman said. \u201cI\u2019m looking for a book with powerful themes of friendship, and maybe creativity?\u201d<\/p>\n

Gemma considered for a moment. \u201cHow about Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow? It\u2019s by Gabrielle Zevin.\u201d The customer\u2019s eyes lit up as she recognised the name. \u201cI think I\u2019ve seen something about it on TikTok, but I don\u2019t know much about it. Is it good?\u201d Gemma smiled. \u201cHonestly? It\u2019s one of the best books I\u2019ve read in years. It\u2019s about two friends who start making video games together and end up building a life around it. It\u2019s about the friendship, creative partnerships, ambitions, identity and trauma.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a complicated and deep friendship as opposed to a romance.<\/p>\n
