Wait until he stripped his wife of her clothes. “Is there new information about Lord Atwell and Sabine? Is that why Lord Rathbourne has summoned us?” Jack was willing to share his first surprise. “Yes, Rathbourne and I came to an agreement.” Jack liked how reasonable that sounded. She would strongly disapprove if she knew the agreement was if Jack won the fencing bout, Rathbourne would arrange for Sabine to attend only the Christmas Eve ball and not the house party.

The prospect of Sabine sleeping in his house near his wife fired his blood to decimate Rathbourne in their fencing match. “Sabine will not be attending our house party.” Abbie stopped and put her hands on her hips. “I thought we agreed it was imperative for her attend.” “It was imperative we give her a chance to steal the plans. And she will have all the time and opportunity to steal them at the Ball. The fake plans that I’ve drawn will be in my locked desk.

It will not be a difficult task for Sabine to pick the lock. Cosgrove, Sabine’s escort for the Ball, and his underling, will watch Sabine and Atwell and apprehend them once they’ve stolen the plans. Rathbourne and his minions are handling all the details. All we need to do is host the party.”

Jack didn’t add ‘and dodge Sabine’. “Why am I getting a strange feeling that this change has something to do with you beating Lord Rathbourne?” As usual, his wife was quick to make the right deduction. Other men might feel threatened, but not Jack. He was proud of his wife’s prodigious talents. Abbie had continued to work early in the morning, deciphering the increasing volume of messages from Napoleon’s pressing invasion.

She didn’t need to make social chit-chat with an evil woman with malevolent intentions. His wife was pure goodness and didn’t need to face evil in her own house, especially at this time of year, of peace and goodwill. “Darling, let’s leave it as a gentleman’s agreement, shall we?” Abbie sighed loudly and squeezed Jack’s arm. “It is great news. Thank you, Jack. I don’t want to know what you did to Lord Rathbourne. Either way, I’m very grateful to have a husband who cares so dearly about my welfare.”

A loving Abbie was beaming at him as if he had fought Napoleon single- handed and won the war. “And there are more surprises.” Jack steered Abbie off the main path, to go towards the renovated hut.

The Code Breakers Series Regency Period Romantic Suspense A Code of Love A Christmas Code A Code of the Heart A Cantata of Love A Wedding Code A Code of Honour The Code Breakers Set Chapter One The Honourable Jack Bonnington gently steered his wife toward a narrow path in the woods. He had plans for a sensual detour before their meeting with Lord Cordelier Rathbourne, England’s Spymaster, who had summoned them for an urgent meeting. Jack feared he might be sent away from his bride.

He’d heard that things were amiss in Dover and Jack was most likely the candidate to assess the problem, since he belonged to the Dover Battlement Committee, charged with fortifying Dover in the event of an invasion of Napoleon’s troops stationed in Calais. He didn’t want to leave Abbie. Jack swallowed the acid taste of fear at the thought of losing Abbie. It was frightening how vital Abbie had become to him in the scant two months of their marriage. He had never before understood the power of obsession, never felt its ferocious pull until now.

“Jack, where are we going?” Abbie paused and looked up at him. Her bright eyes were the same color as her sky-blue pelisse. Despite feasting on every luscious inch of Abbie this morning, he needed more. Alert to the meaning of his bride digging her heels into the damp path, Jack pulled Abbie into his arms. He knew how to change his stubborn wife’s mind. He brushed his lips over hers before coaxing her to open her mouth. The taste of Abbie sent his nerves humming his favourite melody.

“Don’t you want to visit our ‘special place’ this morning?” The forester’s hut deep into the woods had become Jack’s favourite place since that was where Abbie had innocently seduced him prior to their marriage. One of his Christmas presents to her was to rebuild the dilapidated, one-sided wooden hut into a secret hideaway for them from his rambunctious brothers and his father who lived with them.

He and Abbie had made great use of ‘their special place’ during their summer treks between the Bonnington estate and Rathbourne estates in St. John’s Woods, on the outskirts of London.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
