Anne nodded again. \u201cHe came to this town five years ago, and we literally bumped into each other when I was cashing in a bounty. And in true cheerful Bran fashion, he growled at me and promptly ignored me.\u201d Lucy smiled a little at that. Then, the rest registered. \u201cWait, you\u2019re a bounty hunter?\u201d Most of the houses didn\u2019t have much use for women other than as whores or wives.<\/p>\n

She had never met a woman who was a fighter or worked as a bounty hunter. Anne tapped the scar on her face. \u201cDidn\u2019t get this baking cakes.\u201d Lucy blushed. \u201cI\u2019m sorry. I didn\u2019t mean anything with it.\u201d Anne laughed again, and something settled in Lucy.<\/p>\n

She liked this woman who easily laughed. Not something she was used to in her life. \u201cSo, how did you end up with Bran?\u201d \u201cI had gotten myself in some trouble, and Bran was kind enough to help me while I figure out what to do with my life.\u201d She hadn\u2019t meant to share so much and frowned at her hands. Anne placed her hand over Lucy\u2019s, and Lucy saw the scars on her knuckles and fingers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, it\u2019s none of my business. We all have things in our pasts we don\u2019t want to talk about.\u201d All three puppies suddenly started to bark their heads off, and Anne stood from the table, her hand going under the apron and pulling a wicked- looking knife. The door opened, and Bran stepped inside. Lucy stood from the table, too, trying to see if there were any new wounds on him. Anne put the knife away and instead tried to shush the puppies. Bran stopped in front of Lucy and reached for her face but stopped before he touched her.<\/p>\n

She broke away from his gaze and saw the torn-up knuckles. \u201cAre they dead?\u201d He shook his head. \u201cI promised you they would live.\u201d Lucy exhaled, then took his hand and put it against her cheek. \u201cThank you for protecting me again.\u201d<\/p>\n
