He nodded. \u2018If it hadn\u2019t been for Miranda\u2026 Believe it or not, she was the one who convinced my parents.<\/p>\n

And she didn\u2019t breathe a word about yesterday with the quad bike.\u2019 I looked at my watch. \u2018Chris will be waiting for us.\u2019 Vusi looked disappointed. \u2018Aren\u2019t we going inside first?\u2019 he asked and pointed in the direction of our house. I shook my head and started walking towards the garage to fetch the bicycles.<\/p>\n

\u2018There\u2019s no time.\u2019 Vusi ran after me with the backpack bouncing on his back. \u2018C\u2019mon, Clucky, I\u2019ve never been inside a real actress\u2019s house!\u2019 \u2018My mum\u2019s no longer an actress,\u2019 I said. \u2018Besides, she sleeps in the afternoon.\u2019 \u2018Flipping heck, you have a lot of chickens!\u2019 exclaimed Vusi when we came around the corner of the house. The chickens were lazing in the afternoon sun.<\/p>\n

Here and there one was scratching the ground, searching for bugs. I shrugged. \u2018They belonged to my dad. Since he died I\u2019ve been looking after them.\u2019 \u2018I\u2019m sorry,\u2019 said Vusi. \u2018About your dad. And about Cheetah catching one of your chickens.\u2019 \u2018Kathleen,\u2019 I said. \u2018Huh?\u2019 \u2018The chicken\u2019s name was Kathleen,\u2019 I said while taking my and Uncle Hendrik\u2019s bicycles from the garage. I couldn\u2019t believe he\u2019d forgotten Kathleen\u2019s name yet again. \u2018You can ride on mine,\u2019 I said and gave him the bicycle with the basket in front.<\/p>\n

\u2018The gears on Uncle Hendrik\u2019s bike are a little dicey.\u2019 Vusi put his backpack in the basket I always put the eggs in when I went to sell them. \u2018OK, let\u2019s get going,\u2019 he said. Suddenly he looked very pale to me. What if something happened to him? His mum and dad would blame me because we hadn\u2019t stayed home all afternoon like we\u2019d promised.<\/p>\n

When we rode out of the gate I carefully checked both sides of the road to make sure there was no sign of Vusi\u2019s mum. Fortunately the place Chris had talked about wasn\u2019t too far away. \u2018I\u2019ve\u2026 never heard\u2026 of a girl\u2026 called\u2026 Chris,\u2019 wheezed Vusi after we\u2019d covered some distance.<\/p>\n
