Soon they were all asleep. Marco was not sure how long they had slept\u2014whether minutes, hours, or days, but when he woke it was still dark, the loft was lit only by moonlight, and three pairs of eyes shown from out of the shadows. He rose stiffly to a sitting position and looked around. He could just make out the shapes of Texas, Boots, and Elvis, all waiting, it seemed, all watching.<\/p>\n

Carlotta was still asleep. He nudged Polo uneasily. Texas leaned down from the seat of the old rocker. \u201cWell, well, well,\u201d he said. \u201cAre we all dry and warm and comfy? Are our tummies full?\u201d \u201cYes, indeed!\u201d said Polo, yawning. \u201cAbsolutely.\u201d But Marco\u2019s heart beat all the harder. \u201cGood!\u201d Texas Jake told them. \u201cBecause you are about to receive your First Great Mystery.\u201d Marco swallowed. Polo snapped to attention. Carlotta stirred and opened her eyes. \u201cMaybe you can read,\u201d Texas Jake said, looking straight at Marco, \u201cbut to solve the Three Great Mys- teries we will give you, you also have to be fast and clever.<\/p>\n

Are you ready?\u201d Marco nodded. Polo nodded. The other cats crowded in closer. \u201cThe First Great Mystery you have to solve is this: What is inside Bertram the Bad\u2019s doghouse?\u201d Polo thought his legs were going to give out from under him. Marco himself went a little pale around the whiskers. \u201cThe boys and I,\u201d Texas went on, \u201chave always no- ticed how Bertram barks whenever anyone comes near his yard.<\/p>\n

He guards his house night and day, yet none of us has ever seen what it is he protects so fiercely.\u201d \u201cOh, Texas,\u201d Carlotta said worriedly, fully awake now. \u201cDon\u2019t you think this is a bit dangerous?\u201d \u201cNonsense.
