She was slightly disheveled, her complexion a bit rosy. Her jaw was tense, as if she would not give him the satisfaction of enjoying the dance. The grass was damp from last night\u2019s rain and her shoes were wet, but she paid no mind. She had to escape the constant worry of her mother as they settled into their new home. Mama missed London and would have a hard time adjusting to life in the country, but she had no such concerns for herself.<\/p>\n

A bird called from the grove, and Cecilia was eager to see if she could identify it. \u201cCecilia! Come back here this instant!\u201d Mama called. With a sigh, Cecilia turned back toward the cottage. The bird would have to wait. They had arrived a week ago, and since that time, Mama had been in a flurry of unpacking and organizing their belongings. She supervised cleaning the cottage until it sparkled. With limited staff, Cecilia and her older sister, Miriam, had been called upon to help.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe may have to economize,\u201d Mama said, \u201cbut that doesn\u2019t mean we can\u2019t be tidy.\u201d Cecilia wished again that her mother would abandon her mourning clothes. Her refusal to do so would make social engagements awkward in this new area.
