But I\u2019ll take my chances. Flirting, charming, and playing nice haven\u2019t worked. Perhaps Mr. Billionaire will respond to some aggression. \u201cWe were college sweethearts,\u201d he says, sighing. \u201cWe were going to get married, but it got\u2026complicated. We ended things, and I thought she was happy enough to be rid of me, but she started\u2026following me. Everywhere. Harassing my family, anyone else I dated, all my friends. There\u2019s no mention of his parents, his sister, or any friends. I didn\u2019t think that was too weird. Once you get successful enough, it\u2019s lonely at the top. Right now, though, I\u2019m astonished by how smoothly he lies, astonished by myself, for not being able to tell his truth from his fabrications. Annie Clarke isn\u2019t an old spurned lover. She\u2019s an innocent victim who may or may not be anchored to the ocean floor right now. But sure, I can play along.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, where is she now?\u201d \u201cHere\u2014everywhere\u2014I don\u2019t know. It\u2019s complicated.\u201d I never could have imagined Bertram this flustered. \u201cI haven\u2019t seen her in a while, but she makes herself known.\u201d He grabs my shoulders. His grip isn\u2019t painful, but it\u2019s firm. Desperate. \u201cShe hurts anyone who gets close to me. She\u2019s hell-bent on destroying my life.\u201d For once, I wish Elodie were here.<\/p>\n

She may love a little gossip, but that\u2019s what makes her so good at getting people to talk. I try to channel some of her energy now, batting my eyelashes and leaning toward him. \u201cBertram, whatever she\u2019s done, I can help you. I\u2019m a good storyteller.<\/p>\n

Finding people and getting them to talk to me is what I do best.\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t want you to find her.\u201d He\u2019s still holding on to me, but he seems aware of it now, and he eases his grip. \u201cNo matter where I go, she finds me. That\u2019s why I lured you out to the beach, so we could talk somewhere with almost no cell reception and no cameras.\u201d<\/p>\n
