Roran\u2019s heart clenched, his body seizing. \u201cYou\u2019ll live. I\u2019ll make sure of it,\u201d she added. \u201cA skilled liar you\u2019re not,\u201d he forced past his teeth. She smoothed her crimson-slicked hands over his face before she pressed to his chest and forced him to remain still.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe healers are on the way. I know we have one in camp, and we were lucky enough to find more along our path. What were you thinking, Roran? Why would you take off that way?\u201d Aven pressed. He wanted to tell her the truth. He had practice with the hard conversations, didn\u2019t he?<\/p>\n

The casual tone of her voice betrayed her emotions. He felt them as keenly as the splitting pain in his calf. His throat bobbed, and he nearly choked on the words. \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d \u201cJust hold on for me. Okay? Hold on. Because I need you.\u201d Then oblivion took him, and he remembered nothing else.<\/p>\n

The darkness swept in, gathering him close, and sinking iron teeth into him to keep him contained there. He came awake to the sound of low voices speaking, two women bickering back and forth, before he sank back down. He had no idea how much time passed before he slowly roused himself out of unconsciousness. The first twitch of his fingers heralded the stiffness of his limbs. The rest of him felt like absolute and utter shit. His mouth held the faintest taste of bitterness and acidity, as though someone held his head to a plate of brierberries and forced him to eat every single one.<\/p>\n

Roran never had a taste for brierberries, and the only delicacy he wanted was a puff pastry with sweet cream and fresh chocolate sauce. Or perhaps Aven\u2019s tender breast and hard nipple between his teeth. The tent was now silent outside a constant drone of wind.<\/p>\n

Yet the canvas had been battened down and the flaps secured. Blankets and furs piled high around him, and by the time he found the strength to push them off, he was sweating. His shirt clung to his chest. Roran ran a hand over his racing heart. Then, steeling himself, he bent his knee and drew his leg up for a closer examination.<\/p>\n

Nothing but unblemished skin greeted him, not even the twisting and pink puckered skin of a scar.<\/p>\n
