She looked like maybe she’d be going to the Church basement to sort donations for the food bank. At the store, Kyoko began leading the way and made it known to Jess that she wanted to make dinner for them all as a thank you.

A lot of the items were things he didn’t even know the store had or were things he didn’t even know existed. Kyoko wouldn’t explain anything, pretending no English and no ability to read the simplest gesture. They got back and she insisted to Cowell and Jess that they had to stay out of the kitchen. She wouldn’t make any contact with Marcus, instead indicating to Jess and Cowell that they needed to keep Marcus out too. She made herself busy and the three friends passed the time in the living room watching shows.

Marcus was confused and a little hurt. He wanted to show off a bit that Kyoko was into him strongly, but instead, it looked to Cowell and Jess like she didn’t know him at all and had no interest in changing that. Cowell and Jess chalked it up to Japanese culture but there was no way Marcus could explain it wasn’t. They even talked quietly and in amazement, at how incredibly proper and formal she was, and how she didn’t seem able to even think improperly.

Marcus could only stare at the floor and shake his head. He wanted to scream at them that she was completely opposite. The meal that she put out on the small table smelled and tasted incredible to Cowell, Jess, and Marcus. But the way it looked on the plates was something bordering on the artistic. Marcus couldn’t believe it was his plates — the transformation was stunning. Kyoko maintained her formal stiffness throughout, playing the role of the subservient Japanese wife.

The conversation, such as it was, seemed mostly about hours at work, hours sleeping, and hours to yourself, which sounded to them all like not nearly enough. Before too long, Jess and Cowell made to go and Kyoko followed Marcus down the hall to say goodbyes. She lingered trying to say something special to Jess, and Marcus went back to the kitchen to clean up. It was twenty minutes of busy work in the kitchen for Marcus before he realized Kyoko wasn’t anywhere to be seen.

He put away the last item in the kitchen and wiped his hands on a towel he draped around his neck. He leaned into the living room and saw no one, and nor was the bathroom light on.

Copyright © 2020 PiMag and Marissa Reed All rights reserved. I’m in Sacramento now!” Marcus had been sent to Japan two years earlier.

He was part of a team of art purchasers doing a contract for a big bank. One day he and the others were toured around by a locally famous artist to see several museums. He tried to get out of it but there was no chance. When they drove up the gravel driveway nestled under overarching cherry tree branches, an ancient and tiny man came out to greet them.

He introduced his assistant who lurked behind him until beckoned. A young woman emerged dressed in a long, wool skirt, clunky black shoes, and a shapeless brown jacket. Her hair was tied back and she appeared as glum as Marcus felt. He introduced himself to the man first and then to her. She responded formally and stiffly, keeping her eyes down and her face expressionless. The old man took the others to the artifacts deep inside the museum after Marcus pretended to be car sick and needing to wait outside.

The woman and old man shared a sharply worded exchange, the result of which was that she stayed outside with Marcus. It appeared to him as though it was her idea. When the others were gone inside, she finally raised her face.

This is a short excerpt from the opening of “” by Unknown, quoted for review and introduction purposes.
