Let\u2019s have breakfast first. I\u2019m starving, and I can hear Amira moving around.\u201d He leaned down and kissed her between the shoulder blades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything will be fine now.\u201d howered and dressed, John walked out of the bedroom. He could smell coffee, and noticed the dining table was set for three. \u201cGood morning, Sir\u201d Amira greeted him from the kitchen. \u201cGood morning, Amira, and please call me John.\u201d \u201cYes, Sir&#8230; umm ah\u2026 John.\u201d John looked around the kitchen. Fresh coffee was brewing in the French Press, and a plate of cut fruit was ready on the counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmira, you don\u2019t have to do this. You are free now.\u201d Amira blushed. \u201cBut John, Sir. I wanted to. You and Ma\u2019am have helped me so much. I can never repay you.\u201d \u201cAmira, you don\u2019t have to repay us. What was happening to you was wrong, and we wanted to help. So, don\u2019t worry. Now, let\u2019s have some of that coffee.\u201d \u201cYes, Sir\u2026 John. I wanted to make chai for you, but I couldn\u2019t find any ingredients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amira filled a mug with coffee. \u201cSir, do you take milk or sugar?\u201d \u201cNo, thank you. Just black.\u201d \u201cAnd Ma\u2019am?\u201d \u201cShe will be out in a minute. She\u2019s having a shower.\u201d John sipped his coffee. It was stronger than he made it but not bad. He leaned against the kitchen counter, the coffee mug cupped in his hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sleep okay?\u201d \u201cYes,\u201d Amira grinned. \u201cThe bed is so big.\u201d \u201cGood. Treat this as your home until we can work out how to get you back to your family. If there\u2019s anything you need, please tell me.\u201d \u201cYes, John Sir.\u201d \u201cNo need for sir,\u201d John smiled. \u201cTell me, how did you learn such good English?\u201d \u201cAt school S\u2026 ah, John. My parents always wanted my sister and me to go to school because they never did\u2026 I loved school\u2026 but I had to stop\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She bowed her head, embarrassed. \u201cMy family doesn\u2019t have money.\u201d She stopped speaking, fiddling with the hem of her kameez while John watched her. When she looked up, she had a fire in her eyes. \u201cThat is why I came here. I have to earn money, so my parents can rest, and my sister Zaara can continue at school. He weaved between slower runners and walkers, carefully avoiding a small child who had wandered off the grass onto the pavement. Sweat ran into his eyes as he sucked in deep lungfuls of air.
