One pant leg is torn, and his knee is scraped. \u201cHave any of you seen Jack?\u201d Axton asks, out of breath.<\/p>\n<p>Iris scoffs. \u201cWe\u2019re not telling you. Hello, we\u2019re playing a game. We want to win.\u201d Axton heaves a furious, frustrated sigh. \u201cHave you seen Jack?\u201d Axton tries again, only louder this time, voice frantic. Prescott arches a skeptical brow. \u201cWhy are you looking for Jack? He\u2019s your competition.\u201d \u201cAt the party, Jack was on the archery turf, and then he wasn\u2019t,\u201d Axton says, a nervous edge creeping into his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFord and I looked for him. We searched the entire estate. All fifty-two acres. He wasn\u2019t anywhere. No one has seen him.\u201d Harper and I exchange a nervous glance, and instantly my stomach lines with dread. I can\u2019t tell if Axton is a good actor trying to trick us, or if something is wrong. \u201cNo one has seen Jack in hours,\u201d Axton says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJack is missing. He\u2019s gone.\u201d Cold sweat pricks at the back of my neck. Gone. No. \u201cWhere\u2019s Ford?\u201d I blurt out. \u201cMy room,\u201d Axton says. \u201cIn case Jack turns up there.\u201d I grab a pen and paper to leave a note: I went to your room. Meet there. Every bright fourteenth, He by water I don\u2019t put every bright fourteenth or he by water in all capital letters.<\/p>\n<p>Jack knows they\u2019re anagrams and he knows what they mean: Truth Before Everything. Weatherby. All the Liars do. That\u2019s how he\u2019ll be sure I\u2019m the one who left the note. I run down the hall and across the courtyard to Jack and Axton\u2019s room, heart beating in my chest, holding on to hope that Axton is messing with us. When I open the door, Ford stops in his tracks. His eyes dart around, landing on each of us, and a pained expression crosses his face, worry turning to fear.<\/p>\n<p>His blue eyes meet mine. \u201cJack isn\u2019t with you.\u201d Ford chokes on his words. I pull Ford in, and I can feel my big, strong older cousin start to shake in my arms. I want to cry, but I can\u2019t fall apart. I need to hold it together.
