That was the moment she realized she might not be able to hold on to her sister at all, no matter how hard she tried. Love wasn’t enough for a girl like Ava. She fought it tooth and nail, as though somehow it made her weak. Ava fought in advance of pain.

She struck out preemptively. And because Kit knew Ava was terrified of feeling emotional pain, Kit decided she would battle the devil until hellfire came to claim her. Anything to prove to her sister that no matter what she did, she was loved. She was family. All the family they had, and they needed each other.

The memory of it all washed over her now as she stood in the middle of the book shop staring at the spatters of black coffee on the floor. The fragrance of the java permeated the air, and might coat the air currents for hours. Comforting as it might be, all she could see was how much like a crack pipe and toot the cocoa-colored puddle looked. And just how she knew what they looked like was all thanks to her sister.

A groan escaped her, and she pivoted sharply to distract herself from thoughts of Ava inhaling smoke from a wrinkled cradle of foil. At least cleaning this sort of mess was something she could manage without having her heart cracked open. The bucket and mop in the back room asked for nothing in return. Soap and water as good a metaphor for scrubbing her sister’s drama out of her life as any.

Steam rose hot and misting from the bucket in the back room as she ran the tap as hot as she could stand. Bubbles rose with the level of water till she feared she’d not be able to lift and carry it, so she shut it off long before it was full and dumped the old-fashioned string mop into the suds, lost in her thoughts.

She swished it several times, watching the water turn brackish before dumping the water and starting again. As if Gideon coming in and putting her on tenterhooks wasn’t bad enough, digging up conflicting emotions from the neat little grave she’d buried them in, now she had the unenviable task of washing out a mop that should have been clean before it was stored away.

She bit back a groan of impatience at the task and silently cursed Gideon for coming in. And when she dragged the bucket and mop out of the back room, sloshing water out of the sides and onto the floor, she had to choke back the tears trying their damndest to do the exact same thing. The ache in her chest made her ribcage feel so inflexible that she had a hard time bending over to squeeze out the mop.

A Secret in the Ashes Prologue: An Echo in the Shadows A Secret in the Ashes Thea Atkinson 1kitap1.com/en Copyright © 2025 by Thea Atkinson All rights reserved.
