It shouldn’t. Lauren was a friend, if I could even call her that. She was my children’s babysitter. I knew her somewhat, but we didn’t interact much outside her duties. Even this invitation was prompted more by my loneliness than anything else. And yet, the thought she might not come displeased me.

When the doorbell rang, I jumped. My breath caught. I felt frozen for a few seconds before shaking myself out of it and moving towards the door, opening it. I forgot how to breathe. The sight in front of me didn’t help with that. Lauren stood there, wrapped in a dress that fell just above her knees, the fabric clinging to her hips like a second skin.

It was a deep, midnight-blue satin garment that fit her perfectly. It had a low back, a single strap over one shoulder, and the neckline dipped just enough to reveal the swell of her breasts, the soft curve of her collarbone. Her hair was loose, falling in golden waves around her face, and her lips were painted a deep red. I felt my throat go dry. She smiled, slow and warm, and I could feel my pulse thud in my ears.

“Hi,” she said, her voice low, husky, her eyes roaming over my frame. “Hi,” I managed, my voice cracking. I stood there, frozen, unable to move, unable to look away. I’d seen her in sweaters and jeans, and they hadn’t exactly hidden her frame, but this was different. The dress changed her, made her seem more alluring, and it unlocked something in me, something I’d buried deep after parting from my wife.

Trying to regain some control, I stepped aside and gestured for her to enter, and she did so. The scent of her perfume pulled me to her, almost like a physical force. I looked away, closed the door behind her, my fingers trembling, and turned to face her. Her blue eyes were searching mine, and I almost unraveled. I wanted to touch her.

I wanted to pull her close, hold her, and maybe dare to do more. I wanted to kiss her and never let go. I didn’t. I just stood there, stupid and breathless, watching her walk toward the tree, her hips swaying with every step, the dress catching the light, the fabric moving like water. “The house looks nice,” she said, turning to me, a small smile on her lips. “I didn’t expect it to feel so… cozy.” I nodded, unable to speak. My chest ached. Not from sadness or loneliness, but something else.

This is a work of fiction. Similarities to real people, places, or events are entirely coincidental. Jay grabbed his hockey gear, and Ivy simply held onto her stuffed bear, and the sight of them made my heart ache. I hated the thought of being away from them, of having to watch them go, but there was nothing to be done.

My marriage to Cynthia wasn’t working, and we both knew it. Neither of us expected it to end as abruptly as it did, yet I think neither of us regretted it exactly. And yet, that it happened now meant I was just days away from spending my first Christmas away from my children. I shook my head and looked at the clock on the wall – 4:37 p.m.

It wouldn’t take long for their babysitter to arrive to get them. At this time, the winter sun was already sinking behind the buildings, casting long shadows all across the town. My kids were fidgeting. I didn’t doubt they were happy to see Lauren – their babysitter – and to go to their mother, even if they hated to part from me. If only… Lost in thought, I almost jumped when the doorbell rang. After I calmed down, I opened it. Lauren Barker stood there in the thin winter air with a soft, welcoming smile.

Her blonde hair caught the last golden light, framing a face that looked like it belonged in a magazine.
