The rest of the night progresses quickly, and before I know it, my family is heading back home to Stewart Grove and I\u2019m closing down the bar with Collin. He\u2019s quiet as he locks the front entrance, and the room suddenly feels too small. Too quiet. Moving to where the old jukebox is mounted, I select a few classic country songs to fill the silence. Alan Jackson starts to sing about life next to the Chattahoochee River, and I find myself smiling and humming along. I let Collin do his thing behind the bar, while I work on tearing down the remnants of the paint party.<\/p>\n

I was a little nervous painting over the floors I just refinished, but at the end of the day, this place has life and reflects the good, the bad, and the ugly that is life. If paint got on the floor, then so be it. I\u2019d clean it the best I could and move on. Fortunately, I don\u2019t see anything damaging and continue on with my business. I get everything torn down and start moving the tables to the back hallway. Cade dropped them off earlier this morning and said he\u2019d come back tomorrow for everything.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me help,\u201d Collin says, jumping in and helping me carry the tables. Of course, he grabs one in each hand, and the job is complete pretty swiftly. \u201cI really appreciate your family letting me borrow their tables,\u201d I say. \u201cNo problem. Better than renting them from some company or buying new,\u201d he states with a shrug. \u201cVery true.<\/p>\n

And these plastic ones are fairly lightweight and durable.\u201d I wipe my hands down my pants. \u201cPlus, I love that they fold in half. Sure makes moving them easier.\u201d My heart rate is elevated, and it\u2019s not because of a little extra exertion. I moved and set up the tables with ease, so I know it\u2019s not that. It\u2019s Collin. I don\u2019t know why he gets under my skin the way he does, and it\u2019s not in a bad or annoying way.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s simply\u2026him. His scent, his powerful gaze, his uncanny ability to get me without even trying. I can sense his nearness, and my body reacts. It gravitates toward him all on its own. \u201cYou okay?\u201d he whispers, his mouth surprisingly close to my ear. I don\u2019t know when he moved to stand before me, but he\u2019s right here, and it takes every ounce of control I have not to lean into him. \u201cYes,\u201d I reply, my voice breathy and at a higher pitch than normal. Our eyes meet, and I swear I can see the flames dancing in those sapphire pools.<\/p>\n

It reflects his desire, his raw need.<\/p>\n

Classic George Jones pours through the speakers, not too loud, but loud enough all patrons can enjoy the good music. The regulars at the bar turn and wave when I enter, earning me a round of welcomes and hellos from the people I\u2019ll be serving drinks to for the next several hours. \u201cHey, Collin,\u201d Guy hollers, throwing me a wave and a grin. \u201cEvening,\u201d I reply, walking behind the bar and dropping my duffel bag into the cubby hole where we keep personal possessions.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow\u2019s it going?\u201d \u201cOh, not too bad. The game\u2019s on,\u201d he informs me, nodding to the TVs lined up on the wall above the bar. The St. Louis Cardinals are taking on the Chicago Cubs in a much-anticipated rivalry game. Our red birds are up by one in the series but look to be down already in game two. \u201cHow are we doing?\u201d I ask, even though the score is pretty telling.<\/p>\n

\u201cBats are cold,\u201d Guy states, moving to the tip jar and cleaning it out. \u201cHey, so I heard something today,\u201d he adds, stepping closer and lowering his voice. \u201cChuck sold it.\u201d The hairs on the back of my neck stand up and my mouth drops open. \u201cYou\u2019re shittin\u2019 me. He really did it?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
