Harry laughed hysterically when he learned the details. Claire didn’t see the humor. “Hamish is Hamish, my dear. He loves women. Always has.” “He’s sixty years old, Pa.” “Only on paper, my dear,\u201d Harry said. \u201cIn his mind, he just turned twenty-one.” “What would Mom think? Knowing her baby brother just bedded her daughter’s closest childhood friend?”<\/p>\n

Harry laughed again. “Perhaps you should be taking notes.” “I\u2019m sorry, what?” Claire raised her voice in shock. “Molly and Hamish are out living life. You should give it a try.” “I am living life,\u201d Claire said defensively. \u201cI have an exciting job with a company I love.” “Yes, but you know the old saying\u2014all work and no play\u2026\u201d Harry cautioned. “Makes my father a very nosy old man,\u201d she finished. Claire spent the remainder of the afternoon curled up on her sofa with a book.<\/p>\n

The rain continued to come down in heavy, gray sheets, making it difficult to concentrate. Her mind roamed along dark and shadowy corridors, returning to the night at Jay\u2019s place. There hadn’t been an ounce of tension between them. He’d kissed her with longing, just as he had on the street near the bistro. Was it payback? For leaving him high and dry at the bar?<\/p>\n

Surely not. He doesn\u2019t have time to play stupid games like that. Though she could literally count the days they’d spent together on one hand, it didn’t change one very simple fact: he’d touched a place inside her that no man had before.<\/p>\n

Her gaze made another sweep of Calvin\u2019s perfectly curated beach house. Like his opulent home back in Bel Air, it was all sharp lines and neutral tones, giving magazine spread.<\/p>\n

More Men\u2019s Health than Esquire, if you took into account the ten-thousand-dollar rowing machine blocking the view from the best window. Ocean view and air conditioning\u2014a win-win, Calvin had boasted, back when he and this relationship still felt like a good idea. Two years in, Claire wasn\u2019t so sure.<\/p>\n

She locked on the fireplace on the opposite side of the room. The once- roaring fire had dwindled to a lazy smolder. How fitting. Mumbling expletives, she stoked the logs back to life, shoving the wrought-iron poker back on its stand with noisy force. The flames danced again, illuminating the room and further heating her Pinot-flushed cheeks. Her focus dropped to a tiny box tucked beneath the branches of the massive Noble Fir in the corner.
