\u201cWork double, and maybe you\u2019ll get my biryani for lunch.\u201d The promise earned a cheer. Rohan smiled, the easy camaraderie settling around him. Still, unease nipped at the edges. How long could he keep this pace? \u201cWhen is Faluk coming back?\u201d \u201cDepends on whether his debtors are home or not,\u201d Namesh answered. Faluk had left shortly after Rohan\u2019s arrival, heading out to collect overdue payments from those who\u2019d borrowed from him. Rohan thanked her for the juice and rose to his feet.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got a delivery in one hour.\u201d Jamal clapped his hands once as he nudged his brother to stand. After the juice break, the brothers loaded bricks onto the wooden cart hitched to their buffalo. The massive animals stood patient, tails flicking at flies, leather straps creaking as the load settled. Rohan kept cutting wood, stacking plank after plank until the brothers pulled away. Each board he cut and set aside felt like another small piece of order returning to his life.<\/p>\n

He was doing this for Prisha. She\u2019d taken him in without question. Trusted him before she knew who he was. Given him a place when he had none. \u201cRohan!\u201d He looked up from the saw and stilled the blade. Dressed in a maroon button-down over a cream lungi, Faluk stood by the boards Rohan hadn\u2019t stacked yet, bending to run a hand along the edge.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou cut too thin. It\u2019ll warp.\u201d Rohan crossed over and lifted the short board, sighting down its length. He tilted it at an angle of a fraction, recalibrating. \u201cYou\u2019re a hard man to please.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s why this business still stands.\u201d Faluk grunted. But his mouth stretched wide enough to crinkle up the skin around his eyes. \u201cYou\u2019re not doing too badly.\u201d<\/p>\n

He gave a short nod, waved Rohan back to work, then sauntered toward one of the low wooden shelters. Probably his workspace. Rohan grinned and returned to the saw. The more work he accomplished today, the sooner he could give Prisha\u2019s house his full attention. Sweat and repetition filled the emptiness left by what he couldn\u2019t remember. He thought less about who he\u2019d been and more about who he was becoming here. Time blurred in the rhythm.<\/p>\n

When he stopped, his hands were caked with sawdust, palms raw and grain-streaked. Namesh\u2019s call for lunch came like mercy. The debt here wasn\u2019t the one that mattered most. In just over a week, the hospital bill was due. After washing his hands at the outdoor pump, he joined the couple beneath the banyan tree.<\/p>\n
