He was furious with me and he looked _ at me with such hate and anger felt as though had committed the basest of crimes. Incredible as it sounds he didn\u2019t speak to me for two whole days. He couldn\u2019t even bring himself to look at me. I was beginning to think that this was the end, and what a way to go, when John re- lented, realizing the stupidity of his irrational behaviour. Please Please Me was a Number One hit, a phenomenal success. The Beatles were on the crest of a wave.<\/p>\n

They shook the very foundations. of the music industry. Agents and publishers were clamouring for a part of the action, and Brian was counting his blessings and the profits with glee. His faith in the boys and his efforts were coming to fruition. A very sincere and conscientious man, he loved the Beatles dearly. They were his children, his family, his whole life. Whatever he did, he did for them.<\/p>\n

The oppor- tunity for fulfilling all his ambitions was being presented to him in the shape of four scruffy lads from Liverpool. _ And his innate business sense told Brian that the scruff would have to go. Collarless beige suits were to take their place, uniformity in dress and hair-styles would present the clean-cut innocent image that would appeal to the public.<\/p>\n

\u2018Bloody hell, Brian, do we have to?\u2019 was the unanimous cry from the heart. \u2018I hate suits, Brian. We\u2019ll all look like a bunch of pansies.\u2019 \u2018They’ll all think we\u2019re trying to copy the Shadows, Brian. Oh Christ, do we have to?\u2019 and so on. Brian was adamant. Publicity photographs were taken of the four, fresh-faced young innocents, grinning with em- barrassment. It must have been embarrassing for John to grin!<\/p>\n

The rock \u2019n roll band which started so innocently in a Liverpool art college took control of the lives of the group and John\u2019s wife Cynthia, transport- ing them from obscurity to a world of limitless money, idolatry, and sumptuous living without precedent. Well, the day war broke out my mother was expecting her third and positively last child\u2014me! But with His Majesty\u2019s Gov- ernment\u2019s emergency evacuation measures coinciding with this promised addition to the family (my mother thinking she had long ago looked the last dirty nappy in the face) there was very little to laugh about.<\/p>\n

For my two brothers, Tony and Charles, evacuation meant being transported lock, stock and bottle of pop from a densely populated part of Liverpool to the nether regions of North Wales. It could have been outer Mongolia as far as they were concerned. But by all accounts they fared better with their adopted family than my mother, who, like hundreds of other pregnant mums at that time, was carted off to Blackpool, Lancs.<\/p>\n

Just picture the scene. Autumn 1939. Grey days in every respect. The place, Blackpool-by-the-sea.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
