My other hand works its way into his redingote pocket as he writhes underneath me, trying to buck me off. My fingertips are slick with sweat as they wrap around something small, hard and metallic. I draw my hand out of his pocket and hold it up to the light. A dainty, heart-shaped gold locket engraved with forget-me-nots with turquoise stones at their centre. I slide my finger against the catch to reveal the lock of hair inside a hinged, glazed compartment.<\/p>\n

The hair belongs to Mr Churchill\u2019s great-grandmother, I expect. Because there\u2019s no doubt about it \u2013 this is the missing Churchill heirloom. \u2018Care to explain this?\u2019 I ask, still sitting astride Denny. Denny shrugs. \u2018Never seen it before in my life.\u2019 I shift my weight, thighs digging into his hips. \u2018You\u2019re going to have to do better than that, I\u2019m afraid.\u2019 Denny sighs. \u2018Will you stop mauling me if I tell you?\u2019 I smile at him sweetly. \u2018I thought you\u2019d never ask.\u2019 \u2018I won it.<\/p>\n

In a game of whist.\u2019 \u2018From Frank Churchill?\u2019 I demand. \u2018Yes,\u2019 Denny mumbles. \u2018Down there?\u2019 I say, gesturing towards the trapdoor. \u2018Yes.\u2019 \u2018So I was right. It is an illicit gambling den.\u2019 \u2018He does hair too, though,\u2019 Denny says, as if this makes his lie by omission less morally objectionable.<\/p>\n

\u2018Why did you keep it? It\u2019s worth a pretty penny.\u2019 \u2018Well, I couldn\u2019t exactly sell it on, could I? It\u2019s rather distinctive, particularly with the old bat\u2019s hair inside.\u2019 \u2018You could have removed it,\u2019 I reason. \u2018Trust me, I tried. She won\u2019t budge.\u2019 Sounds like a Churchill. \u2018Besides, it\u2019s much more valuable to Frank than it would be to any jeweller. Thought I\u2019d give him the opportunity to win it back.\u2019<\/p>\n

He grimaces and shuffles underneath me. \u2018Look, will you let me up now? It feels as if there\u2019s a walrus sitting on my stomach.\u2019 \u2018Fine,\u2019 I say, shifting my weight onto his chest to push myself up and off him. He winces, but doesn\u2019t complain. \u2018But you still have the locket,\u2019 I say, dangling the chain in front of his face as he scrambles to his feet.<\/p>\n

\u2018Yes, well, I haven\u2019t seen him for a few days. Which is odd for Frank. Usually he\u2019s here whenever he can escape from his tyrant of an aunt.\u2019 His eyes follow the locket as it swings back and forth. \u2018This gambling den. It\u2019s run by a fellow called Durand? French, is he? Your French barber?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018How do you\u2014\u2019 \u2018I have my sources.\u2019 \u2018The premises are his,\u2019 Denny admits. \u2018And does he lend out money to his patrons?\u2019 Denny shakes his head. \u2018I wouldn\u2019t know about that.\u2019<\/p>\n
