We have the herd check in the lower pasture. Fence repair on the north ridge.” “I have rounds,” Harper said. “Monty’s dressing needs changing. And I want to check the foal.” “Ridge goes with you,” Colt said instantly.

Harper paused. “I can change a dressing alone, Colt.” “Ridge goes with you,” Colt repeated. “To the barn. To the pasture. Anywhere outside the house yard.” “The rule was no meetings alone,” she said. “Not ‘Harper needs a bodyguard to walk ten feet’.” “The rules changed,” Colt said. He leaned forward.

“You’re not just an employee anymore, Harper. You’re… us. And that means you’re a target.” “I was already a target,” she said. “Now you’re a target with leverage,” I said quietly. “If Mercer knows… if Oliver knows…” “They won’t know,” she said. “We’re discreet.” “We’re a lot of things,” I said. “Discreet isn’t usually one of them. Did you see the way you looked at Colt just now? A blind man could see it.”

She flushed. “Ridge stays close,” Colt said finally. “Jesse and I will handle the fence. We’ll meet back here for lunch. We need to go over the audit paperwork.” “Actually,” I said. They all looked at me. I kept my voice light, but I felt the weight of the decision. “We need supplies,” I said.

“We’re out of nails for the fence. And Harper needs to not be in this kitchen staring at the sink. We should go to town.” “Town?” Harper asked. Her eyes went wide. “Yeah,” I said. “Breakfast at the diner. Hardware run. We show our faces. We show them we aren’t hiding.” Colt frowned. “It’s risky.” “Hiding is riskier,” I said. “Hiding makes us look guilty. We go in. We get coffee.

We act like nothing happened.” Colt looked at Harper. “You up for it?” She straightened her spine. “Yes. I’m not a prisoner.” “Then we go,” Colt said. “All of us.” The town felt different today. Usually, when I walked down Main Street, I waved. I smiled. I stopped to chat about the weather or the football scores. I was Jesse Vale, the guy who could charm a discount out of a stone.

Today, the street felt like a gauntlet. We parked the truck. We walked in formation: Colt on point, Ridge at the rear, Harper and I in the middle. People stopped talking when we passed. I saw Mrs. Higgins turn her back. I saw the postman cross the street to avoid us. “Ignore it,” I whispered to Harper. She was pale, her hand gripping my arm.

“I’m trying,” she said.

This book is a work of fiction. I wasn’t supposed to be home. The metal handle was slick under my palm, cold against my skin, but it was the smell that hit me first. You don’t need to be Sherlock Holmes to know when someone else’s perfume is in your home.

It wasn’t the soft, warm body spray I knew by heart. This was flat and heavy, sharp and prickly as hell, the kind of cheap, sweet scent Annie loved to drown herself in.
