\u201cWould you stop!\u201d I shouted, opening the window again. \u201cIt\u2019s morning!\u201d he said like I hadn\u2019t noticed. \u201cI know a really good place for bread, and they always finish baking right around now. Let\u2019s get some!\u201d \u201cI should tell Raka you\u2019re skipping class,\u201d I muttered. \u201cI\u2019m gonna go back after,\u201d he protested. \u201cHold on,\u201d I said with a sigh, and I shut the window, dressed, and went downstairs. Oli was bouncing pebbles between his hands like he was trying to juggle, and I walked over to him and turned them all into ice cubes with a wave of my hand.<\/p>\n

They fell onto the ground and shattered. \u201cWell, come on,\u201d I said. \u201cShow me this bread you woke me up for.\u201d \u201cYou have to show me how to do that,\u201d he said. \u201cNo, I don\u2019t.\u201d \u201cAw, why not?\u201d \u201cBecause I\u2019m busy, and that\u2019s not what I\u2019m here to do. Ask your dad.\u201d We started up the street. A dragon flew over us, following the street and making the occasional hard dip to drop a pack of newspapers off at every corner, where a group of young kids divided them up and carried them away to deliver.<\/p>\n

At an hour when Old Shore Port would just be getting started, it seemed like Stonvale had never stopped going. We went through an alleyway and came to a street that was already noisy with traffic and hawker salesmen shouting on the sidewalks. The bakery was an open storefront on a corner, with walls lined with shelves loaded with half-globes of golden-crusted bread. A large clay oven was stoked by a fire dragon, who stopped what she was doing when Oli came hopping up.<\/p>\n

\u201cHi, Oli,\u201d she said, and she turned to human form. \u201cWho\u2019s your friend?\u201d \u201cHe\u2019s a friend of my dad\u2019s,\u201d he said. \u201cI told him all about your bread. Do you have any unwanteds?\u201d \u201cNo, I\u2019m afraid not. We had a good batch today, all of them are going to the shelves.\u201d \u201cOh,\u201d he said disappointedly, and he turned to me and said, \u201cUsually they have a few they give away to anyone who gets here early enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

We were a day at sea with another two to go until we reached Old Shore Port, and despite the seasickness, I couldn\u2019t be more excited.<\/p>\n

My life was starting. I\u2019d only ever been able to dream about the north and all of its promises of alchemic freedom, where you could find all the rare gear, ingredients, and knowledge a young dragon could want. Where I came from, all you could find was ice and thin living, and all you could do was whatever you could to survive. For years, I\u2019d stared into the white expanse and wondered how I would be able to make my way to the sea and how I would find the money to get on a ship.<\/p>\n

I looked at maps and fantasized about ways I could fly across the water, but any dragon could see the distance was impossible. And then, one day, a stranger wandered into the markets asking for salves and fire orbs. I knew he was an ice dragon like me because he only wore a light tunic, unlike the humans who couldn\u2019t survive without their thick fur coats.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
