Something fishy is going on, but is it bad, or is he like me, going outside the system to help dogs he\u2019s worried about?<\/p>\n

We’re running low on the special diet kibble,” I call out to him as I take the keys for the van off the hook. “I’m going to go out and get a couple of bags. Are you okay keeping an eye open while I’m out?”<\/p>\n

He doesn’t even look up, just waves a hand. “Sure. I’m here a while.” Remembering my duty, I pull my phone out and tap a message. Me: This is me messaging like a good girl to let you know I\u2019m going out to pick up some dog food and check out a foster home. Piston: Was that so hard? Me: Yes. Zero: Poor baby, we\u2019ll kiss it better later. Beast: Thanks for the headsup.<\/p>\n

\ud83d\ude42 Guys really, how do I turn off the notification sound? I grab the keys to the van and run by the bulk store first. We weren\u2019t really that low, but it would look strange if I came back with nothing and there was no receipt. This feels like the plot of a cozy mystery. Local girl who works at a dog rescue comes up with a zany plan to bring down fake foster homes for puppies. I\u2019ve probably watched too many real crime shows.<\/p>\n

Gotta love trash talk from the guy who lost in our first round. If I wasn\u2019t wearing boxing gloves I\u2019d flip him off. Beast smirks, dodging my jab before moving in faster than a guy his size should be able to. He lands a couple solid hits before I beat him back. \u201cPiston, keep your left up!\u201d Don yells. I adjust my stance, but it\u2019s too late. We\u2019ve been sparring for a while and Beast is on a rampage. I eventually fall back and lift an arm in defeat. Beast claps a gloved fist on my shoulder and spits out his mouth guard.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood fight. I told you you\u2019d enjoy it. You\u2019re going to wipe the ring with me in a couple months.\u201d \u201cYeah, maybe.\u201d It feels strange to be fighting again, and even stranger to actually enjoy it. When I was a stupid kid, it was about money and survival. The rings I grew up in might not have been to the death, but I\u2019ve gone up against plenty of sadistic motherfuckers who thought me being young made me an easy target, and so long as it made for a good show, nobody cared.<\/p>\n

Being harder, faster and meaner was the only way to keep it from destroying me. The rules here are more complicated than just no killing and no weapons, but the rush is the same. \u201cHe\u2019s right,\u201d Don agrees. \u201cYour instincts are good.
