That\u2019s his job. He\u2019ll find out if they\u2019re innocent or rebel spies. If they\u2019re on the wrong side of the party, they\u2019ll be dealt with appropriately.\u201d \u201cDo you think they\u2019re rebels? They\u2019re only children.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are used the most, my dear. Rebels use children for all sorts of deeds\u2014child soldiers, they\u2019re called. Don\u2019t let their age fool you.\u201d Well Abby wasn\u2019t going to get anywhere with Mrs. Means. Might as well play the fragile aristocrat. \u201cThat\u2019s absolutely frightening. And to think such a thing could happen here, on Clement land.\u201d Mrs. Means took her by the shoulders. \u201cDon\u2019t let it deter you from the place or the man.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve never known anything like it to happen before, and more than likely it won\u2019t happen again. The rebels will be dealt with; that\u2019s something you can be certain about. That Captain Clement likes your company too much to let you feel that you\u2019re in danger.\u201d She forced a smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, I believe he does.\u201d The older woman directed her toward a small sofa. \u201cNow, tell me everything you\u2019re thinking about for your wedding. Old women love hearing details of such things.\u201d For the next hour Abby spun a tale that relied heavily on summer rosebuds and gardenias. By the end of it, she didn\u2019t even know what all she\u2019d said.<\/p>\n

That meant six months of wigs, perfumes and lace. It proved to be six months more than she ever wanted of the fluffy stuff. But soon it would all be over. Mrs. Means eyed her from the opposite bench. The older woman jostled up and down, her hefty bosom flopping at each bump. \u201cYou are just going to love the countryside, my dear. It\u2019s so much better than the city. It\u2019s a wonder the captain doesn\u2019t live out here all year long. But of course, business keeps him in the city at times, I\u2019m sure. Perhaps one day you\u2019ll find out all about that.\u201d She gave a knowing wink.<\/p>\n

Yes, the rumor mill among the older women in the new aristocracy was that she, Abigail Westbrook, would marry Captain Jonathan Clement within the next year. He hadn\u2019t asked, but that didn\u2019t stop the tongues from wagging until they drooled. For a woman of thirty, Abby was lucky. She looked to be in her midtwenties, which had helped attract Jonathan in the beginning of their relationship. If she appeared any older, she never would\u2019ve caught his eye. It seemed men these days liked their women young.<\/p>\n

As in \u201cjust rendered\u201d young, which was about fifteen or sixteen. Good thing her strawberry- blonde curls didn\u2019t have even one-eighth of an inch of gray to ruin them. Still, she wanted this whole job to be over within the next month. It would be even better if it was finished by the end of the weekend. During her stay, perhaps she\u2019d find time to search the house and get what she needed.<\/p>\n

Abby could only hope. Mrs. Means aired herself with a lace fan. \u201cOf course, you\u2019re not likely to get much private time with the captain this weekend. Word is that he\u2019s having at least one friend visit as well. There\u2019s you and me, of course, and then his uncle, James Clement, a retired soldier.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
